Abstract: Mass transfer equipment comprises a base (3) having at least one riser (1) with inwardly and upwardly elongated sloping sides and a moveable valve cap (2) positioned above the riser (1), having outwardly and downwardly elongated sloping sides. Legs (5) extend downwardly from the valve cap (2) and possess stops which limit the movement of the valve cap (2) to such an extent that the lower edge of the sloping side of the valve cap (2) is never above the upper edge of the sloping side of the riser (1). Dimples (4) may be provided on the riser (1) to prevent sticking when the valve is closed.

Abstract: A heat storage medium contains (a) a sodium hydroxide in concentration from 60% by weight up to and including the stoichiometric concentration in sodium hydroxide monohydrate, (b) water in concentration from 40% by weight down to and including the said stoichiometric concentration, and (c) 0.1 to 2.0% by weight of tellurium dioxide, all percentages being expressed as percentages by weight of the total weight of sodium hydroxide and water. The tellurium dioxide reduces the tendency of the sodium hydroxide water system to supercool.

Abstract: This invention relates to a process for producing aromatic hydrocarbons suitable for use as gasoline blending components. In the process a mixed hydrocarbon feedstock comprising a C5-C12 hydrocarbon fraction containing olefins and an (un)saturated C3-C4 hydrocarbon is brought into contact in the vapor phase with an aluminosilicate having a gallium compound deposited thereon or having gallium ions exchanged with cations therein. The resultant product shows considerable improvement in RON and MON and is therefore ideal for blending with gasoline. Hydrogen is formed as a valuable by-product.

Abstract: A corrosion-inhibiting composition comprises a blend of particles of two amorphous silicas; one containing corrosion-inhibiting cations releasable by ion-exchange and the second being substantially free of any corrosion-inhibiting ions. The weight ratio of the cation-containing silica to non ion containing silica is in the range 20:80 to 60:40. The corrosion-inhibiting composition may be incorporated into liquid media and protective coatings, which are based on film-forming polymers e.g. epoxy resins, vinyl resins, epoxy esters. The amorphous silica used is preferably of a microporous type. Calcium cations are the preferred corrosion inhibiting cations. The composition is preferable used to inhibit corrosion of aluminium surfaces.

Abstract: Sulphonated polyketones are prepared by reacting a linear alternating copolymer of carbon monoxide and one or more olefins (polyketone) with a sulphonating agent (eg chlorosulphoric acid) in a solvent (eg dichloromethane) at a temperature in the range -20 to +40 DEG C. A molar excess of sulphonating agent is preferably used. The sulphonated polyketone produced contains one or more types of unit of formula -[COC(R )2C(R )2]- wherein the R groups are independently H, C1 to C10 alkyl or SO3H with the proviso that at least one R group is SO3H.
