Abstract: A method of quenching a workpiece is provided with one or more spray quench rings that eject a controlled variable volume of spray quench onto a workpiece passing through the quench rings by dynamically adjusting the axially adjustable distance between the inner and outer ring elements of each quench ring while the workpiece passes through the quench rings in response to mass cooling requirements of the workpiece passing through the quench rings. The quench rings can also be axial adjusted relative to each other in response to the mass cooling requirements. Dynamically adjustable reflected spray guards can be provided to prevent quench spray pattern interference between adjacent quench rings.

Abstract: La presente invencion se refiere a en un método para soldar eléctricamente juntas un par de porciones de borde de una parte o partes metálicas que tienen superficies opuestas en las cuales dichas porciones de borde tienen superficies de borde y son avanzadas hacia un punto de soldadura con dichas superficies de borde en una relacion opuesta y espaciada delante del punto de soldadura pero que se unen juntas en dicho punto de soldadura, dichas superficies de borde se calientan hasta la temperatura de soldadura al momento en el cual alcanzan dicho punto de soldadura por medio de corrientes eléctricas de alta frecuencia inducidas en el metal de dicha parte o partes y que fluyen, en cualquier momento dado, en una direccion en una de dichas superficies de borde y en la direccion opuesta en la otra de dichas superficies de borde, la mejoría comprende: la induccion de un par de dichas corrientes de alta frecuencia por al menos dos bobinas de induccion, una de dichas bobinas se coloca en un lado de dicha parte o partes metálicas y la otra bobina se coloca en el lado opuesto de dicha parte o partes metálicas y una de dichas dos corrientes inducidas por una de dichas bobinas fluye en la misma direccion que la otra de dichas dos corrientes inducida por dicha otra bobina en cada una de dichas superficies de borde.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for modifying the surface properties of a metal part in which electric current having a frequency of at least 3000 Hz is supplied to a narrow area on the part by means of contacts, one at each end of the area, and a proximity conductor or is induced therein by an induction coil until the metal in the area reaches a temperature at least equal to its melting temperature. A material which will alloy with the metal of the part is added to the molten metal so that when the molten metal is cooled an area of an alloy of the metal and the added material is produced. The added material may be in the form of a gas, powder, salt, wire, rod, bar, foil, etc. and may be applied to the area before, during, or after the melting of the metal of the area. The spacing between the proximity conductor or the induction coil and the work is no greater than three times the width of the proximity conductor or the coil conductor.

Abstract: Method and apparatus for modifying the surface properties of a metal part made of a metal which changes its properties with heating to a transformation temperature and subsequent cooling in which method electric current having a frequency of at least 3000 Hz is supplied to a pair of contacts respectively at the opposite ends of the surface area to be modified through a proximity conductor or conductors which are spaced from the surface area by not more than two times the width of the conductor. The duration, frequency and magnitude of the current and the width of the proximity conductor or conductors are chosen so that the metal of such area heats at least to the transformation temperature before the adjacent metal reaches a temperature which would prevent self-quenching of the area metal, by means of conduction of heat from the area metal to the adjacent metal, when the current is discontinued. Apparatus for producing lines of hardening on valve seats is disclosed.
