Abstract:
Polyester and copolyester blends are compatibilized by mechanical addition therewith effective compatibilizing amounts of a non-volatile, solid, low molecular weight copolymer salt of ethylene, acrylic acid, and calcium ion. Such ternary blends are homogeneous as indicated by the increase in tensile impact strength and hardness of the binary polyester and copolyester blends.
Abstract:
Azeotrope-like compositions of 1,1,1,3,3-pentafluoropropane and 1,1-dichloro-1-fluoroethane are provided. The compositions of the invention are useful in the preparation of polyurethane and polyisocyanurate foams and as aerosol propellants.
Abstract:
A radar based terrain and obstacle detection device for aircraft detects obstacles and terrain ahead of the aircraft. An alert is sounded if the obstacle or terrain is above a clearance plane positioned ahead of the aircraft.
Abstract:
A photoelastic force sensor comprising a sensor plate or disk bonded by means of diffusion or reactive bonding of identical or like materials onto a first face of a spacer ring which defines an aperture. The spacer ring also has an appropriate thickness and width so that other sealing requirements that induce stress into the spacer ring are not appreciably passed onto the sensor plate. A seal plate is attached to a second face of the spacer ring to form a sealed cavity which can then be evacuated or pressurized as required for the application.
Abstract:
A method for separating hydrogen fluoride from a chemical mixture is provided. In the process of the invention, hydrogen fluoride is separated from a chemical mixture containing hydrogen fluoride by contacting the chemical mixture with a hydrogen fluoride binder. The separated hydrogen fluoride may be recovered from the hydrogen fluoride binder. The hydrogen fluoride binder is a synthetic water-soluble polymer, preferably sodium polyacrylate.
Abstract:
A process for producing 1-substituted-4-fluoro-1,4-diazoniabicyclo[2.2.2]octane salts having formula (I) wherein the Z substituent is OH, OR, OC(O)R, SO3, SO2R, NO2, NO, or PO(OR)2, wherein R is an aryl or C1-C8 alkyl group; n is 0, 1 or 2; each of R1, R2, R3, R4 and R5 independently represent hydrogen, C1 to C8 alkyl, or aryl. 1-substituted-1,4-diazoniabicyclo[2.2.2]octane or 1,4-diazoniabicyclo[2.2.2]octane mono-N-oxide is reacted to attach the Z group and then the result is reacted with molecular fluorine in the presence of a solvent that substantially does not react with fluorine and a fluoride scavenger that results in an X counter ion. These compounds are useful as fluorinating agents for the introduction of fluorine into organic compounds.
Abstract:
A material cover (27) for a vehicle seat (22), the seat having a seat back (26) having a front surface (28), a rear surface (32) and a side surface (30), the material cover (27) including front (28'), rear (32') and side (30') material panels covering the front, rear and side of the seat back, a reinforcement panel (50, 50') secured to an inside surface (31) of the side material (30') for effectively decreasing the elongation of the side panel (30') to localize stress in the side material portion (30') to encourage the side material portion to tear along a line proximate a side (52a) of the reinforcement panel when the panel is forced outwardly by the action of an inflating air bag (46).
Abstract:
A catalytic reactor is provided for the decomposition of ozone in air. The reactor comprises a core structure (10) having an inlet end effective for receiving a flow of ozone-containing air and an outlet end effective for discharging the ozone-containing air therefrom. The core structure is made of a catalytically-active metal alloy which is effective for decomposing at least a portion of the ozone present in the air as the ozone-containing air flows between the inlet end and outlet end of the core structure. The catalytically-active alloy comprises a silver-containing metal alloy and may comprise an alloy having silver and copper as the principle constituents. The catalytically-active alloy may optionally be thermally activated for use in low temperature applications. The core structure may be configured so as to provide a plurality of tortuous flowpaths between the inlet and outlet ends of the core structure to promote turbulent flow of the ozone-containing air.
Abstract:
Azetrope-like compositions of 1,1,1,3,3-pentafluoropropane and at least one hydrocarbon selected from the group n-pentane, iso-pentane, cyclopentane, n-hexane and iso-hexane are provided. The compositions of the invention are useful in the preparation of polyurethane and polyisocyanurate foams.
Abstract:
Fluorination processes using hydrogen fluoride-containing fluorinating agents that are safely and easily handled, transported, and stored and that also exhibit good reactivity are provided. More particularly, the invention provides processes for producing fluorinated products using fluorinating agents comprising hydrogen fluoride and a carrier that may be an acid salt or a water-soluble polymer.
