Abstract:
The invention provides a process for the production of alpha -methylstyrenes. In particular, the invention provides a process for producing alpha -methylstyrenes from dimethyl phenyl carbinols using an acid salt, which process produces the alpha -methylstyrenes in excellent yield with no significant byproduct formation.
Abstract:
A carbon-carbon composite material is made by providing an open-celled carbon foam preform, and densifying the preform with carbonaceous material. The open-celled carbon foam prefrom may be oxygen stabilized prior to carbonization, and the foam preform densified by CVD, HIP, PIC, VPI, pitch and resin injection, or any combination thereof. The carbon-carbon composite material can be heat treated to provide thermal management materials, structural materials, or a friction material for use in a brake or clutch mechanism.
Abstract:
A nonwoven filter media or mat (10) formed from a plurality of elongated generally hollow fibers (20) each having an internal cavity (22) which has an opening (24), smaller than the cavity width, to the fiber (20) surface and each retaining within the internal cavity (22) a large number of relatively small solid particles (18). The small solid particles (18), which can be an adsorbent such as activated carbon, are permanently entrapped within the longitudinal cavities (22) of the fibers (20) without the use of an adhesive.
Abstract:
An air filtration or fluid treatment system includes a nonwoven filter media or mat (10) formed from a plurality of elongated generally hollow fibers (20) each having an internal cavity (22) which has an opening (24) to the fiber surface and each retaining within the internal cavity a large number of relatively small solid particles (18), which interact with the air or other fluid stream to be treated. The solid adsorbent particles (18), such as activated carbon, are permanently entrapped within the longitudinal cavities (22) of the fibers (20) without the use of an adhesive or without being embedded onto or within the polymer fiber.
Abstract:
The present invention pertains to a process for separating pentafluoroethane from a mixture with chloropentafluoroethane. A mixture of pentafluoroethane and chloropentafluoroethane is contacted with an entraining agent to form an azeotrope of the entraining agent and chloropentafluoroethane. Subsequently the pentafluoroethane is separated from the binary azeotrope of chloropentafluoroethane and entraining agent by distillation. Distillation is conducted such that the azeotrope of chloropentafluoroethane and entraining agent is removed as an overhead distillation fraction and the pentafluoroethane is removed as a bottoms distillation fraction.
Abstract:
The present invention provides a microscanner (30, 32, 34, 36) cascaded with the electromechanical scanners (12, 14) in imaging systems to enhance their performance and correct inherent deficiencies in the scanning and/or the displayed imagery.
Abstract:
A terrain awareness system and method which provides increased warning times to the pilot of an aircraft of a hazardous flight condition while minimizing nuisance warnings. An important aspect of the invention is that the terrain background information as well as the terrain advisory and warning indications may be displayed on a navigational or weather display, normally existing within an aircraft, which reduces the cost of the system and obviates the need for extensive modifications to existing displays, such as a navigational and weather radar type display.
Abstract:
A system for transmitting a database or other software over a communication link, such as the Internet, which prevents unauthorized use. In order to prevent such unauthorized use, the customer's equipment, such as a GPS unit, is provided with a unique software key. The updated database is ordered over the communication link by providing the unique software key and may include electronic payment information. The database is encrypted, for example, as a function of the unique software key and transmitted over the communication link in encrypted form along with an upload program. The upload program only allows the encrypted database to be uploaded into a unit with a matching software key. As such, the system allows updated databases to be transmitted rather quickly and easily over a communication link while preventing unauthorized use.
Abstract:
A display apparatus (10) having a display (12) including indicia representative of a measured parameter, an indicator (13) shiftable relative to the display, and a control assembly (14) for controlling the positioning of the indicator relative to the display. The control assembly includes a microprocessor (16) for receiving navigational signals and for converting the navigational signals to control signals and a stepper motor (18) responsive to the microprocessor for driving the indicator in response to the control signals. The control assembly also includes an indicator position sensor (20) for determining the actual positon of the display indicator and for generating position signals representative of this actual position. The microprocessor uses these position signals for calibrating the stepper motor.
Abstract:
The invention provides a process for the separation of azeotropic mixtures of fluorocarbons from hydrogen fluoride. The most preferred fluorocarbon for this invention is 1,1,1,3,3-pentafluoropropane, which is also known as HFC-245fa. The separation is conducted by adding sulfuric acid to the mixture while the mixture is in either the liquid or gaseous states.
