Abstract: The dyes are of formula (in which R is opt. substd. alkyl and ring A may contain other substits.) Either ring A or R contains a gp. of formula - (CH2)nCOO(CH2CHO)mR' (in which R' is (1-4)C alkyl, B is H or methyl, m is 2,3, or 4 and n is O-H). Pref. dyes contain H, Cl or the above polyglycol ester grp. in p-position to the azo gp. in ring A, and R is (1-10)C alkyl or the above polyglycol ester grp. The dyes are made by diazotising opt. substd. o- nitranilines, coupling with homophtalimide derives, and esterifying with a polyglycol ether if necessary. They are suitable for dyeing natural and synthetic textiles, esp. polyesters in greenish to reddish yellow shades, and can be made up into liquid concentrates.

Abstract: Phthalimidines are prepd. by reacting diphthalides or monophthalide carboxylic acids having the general formula R1R2Ar-CO-O-CH2 (I) (where R1 and R2 as well as -CO-O-CH2 are each linked to vicinal C atoms of a benzene ring; Ar denotes 1 or 2 linked benzene rings which may be linked by a gp. X, where X is -O-, -S-, -CO-, alkylene or -p-NH-CO-C6H4-CO-NH-; R1 and R2 together form a -CO-O-CH2- gp. or R1 is COOH and R2 is H) with isocyanates in anhydrous polar solvents. Reaction with polyisocyanates may take place in the presence of aromatic dicarboxylic acids, to form amide-contg. copolymers or polyphthalimidine amides. Lower phthalimides can be converted to aromatic tri- and tetracarboxylic acids. Higher phthalimidines or phthalimidine amides are interesting polymers for prepn. of coatings, esp. wire lacquers, laminates and fibres.
