    Abstract: PURPOSE: To provide a conductive surface electron emitting element, as an electron beam source and having high brightness, high fineness, and obtainable of a high quality picture image without uneven brightness, when the screen size is increased for a picture image forming device. CONSTITUTION: In this conductive surface electron emitting element, an electron emitting part 2 is provided on a conductive thin coat 3 over element electrodes 4 and 5 formed on a base plate 1. The electron emitting part 2 is arranged only in the vicinity of the different level part of the element electrode 5 portion, a part being formed thick, and a control electrode 7 is arranged via an insulating layer 6 onto the element electrode 5 in the vicinity of the electron emitting part 2. Consequently, the attraction of an emitted electron to a high electric potential side element electrode can be prevented, by making drive with the element electrode 5 made to have high electric potential and the element electrode 4 and control electrode 7 made to have low electric potential, thereby improving an electron emitting efficiency.

    Abstract: PURPOSE: To form a film having a high fusing point and high resistance to a strong electric field so as to improve the electron emission efficiency and durability by making the carbon and carbon compounds on the conductive film on an electron emitting part and in the vicinity of both its potential sides high crystal. CONSTITUTION: Element electrodes 4 and 5 and a conductive film 3 are made on a substrate by specified treatment process, and an electron emission part 2 is made by applying a current between the element electrodes 4 and 5 and partially transmuting the conductivity 3. Next, a film 6 including crystalline carbon is stacked on the electron emission part 2 and on both potential sides in its vicinity by the activation processing by applying AC voltage pulses having specified crest values, under the atmosphere where a carbon compounds exists. Furthermore, successively, it is given high crystal property by applying emitted electrons to carbon and carbon compound. Hereby, a film, which has a high fusing point and high resistance to a strong electric field, can be made on the electron emission part 2 and a both-conductivity film 3 in its vicinity.

Voltage is applied across electrodes 22, 23 of an element, and by performing forming, an electron emitting part is provided in the electron emitting part forming thin film 24 between the element electrodes, to create the electron emitting element.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce deterioration in an electron emitting element caused by gas escape from an image forming member at the time of image formation by applying a reverse voltage to a voltage applied at the time of image formation, to a pair of electrodes of the electron emitting element, and applying electrons emitted from the electron emitting element to an image forming member, thereby escaping gas sticking and remaining on the image forming member. SOLUTION: When a negative or positive voltage is set between first and second element electrodes 65, 66 and further a high voltage is applied to an image forming member 68, electrons emitted from an electron emitting part 67 collide on the image forming member 68, thereby facilitating gas escape from the image forming member 68. The beam spot position of electron beam colliding on the image forming member 68 is displaced to the high potential sides of the first and second element electrodes as shown by a distance Xc. The beam spot position at the time of aging (b) is made equal to the beam spot position at the time of image formation. Accordingly, gas escape in the beam spot region at the time of image formation can be made actively.
