When the sizes of the retardation in the transparent protect film in the respective colors of R, G and B are expressed by DELTAR, DELTAG and DELTAB the relations of DELTAR>DELTAG>DELTAB are satisfied and when a 1/ 2 angle formed by average polymer direction in the two stable states of ferro- inductive liquid crystal is defined as thetaa, a delay phase axis direction 5 of the DELTAR, DELTAG and DELTAB is set within the range of tea with a layer normal direction 1 of the ferro-inductive liquid crystal as a center.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To improve color reproducibility and to prevent the malfunction of an optical element by applying colored resins formed by incorporating coloring materials into resins on a substrate, then exposing and developing the resins via a mask, patterning the colored resin films and forming metallic films therebetween. CONSTITUTION:After the colored resin 2 formed by incorporating the coloring material into the resin is applied on the substrate 1 and is then exposed and developed via the mask 4. The colored resin patterns 5 to 7 of plural colors are formed on the substrate 1 by using the colored resins 2 of different hues and repeating the above-mentioned operation plural times. Further, the metallic films 8 are formed between the colored resin patterns 5 and the unnecessary metallic films 3 laminated on the colored resin patterns are removed by polishing. Since the metallic film patterns are in the form of self-alignment at the time of formation of these patterns and, therefore, the metallic films 8 are closely formed between the color filter picture elements of the respective colors. Color reproducibility is improved and the malfunction of the optical element is prevented.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To improve the color reproducibility and to prevent an optical element fro malfunctioning by arranging light-nontransmissive metallic films between color filter picture elements without any gap. CONSTITUTION:An exposed photoresist film 5 is developed and rinsed to form photoresist-sticking resin patterns 6-8 having photoresist patterns which are of the same size, i.e. self-aligned on colored resin patterns 2-4. Then the light opaque metallic film 9 is formed on the substrate which has the photoresist- sticking resin patterns 6-8. Then, a solution which dissolves only the photoresist pattern is used to lift off the light-nontransmissive metallic film 9 positioned above the colored resin patterns 2-4, thereby obtaining color filters 6'-8' which have a light-nontransmissive metallic pattern 10 arranged between respective color filter picture elements without any gap. Consequently, the color reproducibility is improved and an optical element is prevented from malfunctioning by sufficient light shielding.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To improve the display quality by forming at least one electrode part on a transparent conductive film on an insulating film and also providing a low-resistance conductive film which is connected electrically to the transparent conductive film. CONSTITUTION:The transparent electrode 11 formed of a transparent conductor is used as a scanning electrode or signal electrode for multiplexing drive and this transparent electrode 14 is provided on the insulating film 13 formed on a substrate. Further, the low-resistance electrode 12 which is formed of a conductive film by a vacuum device or sputtering method for metal such as aluminum and chromium or its alloy is provided on the substrate 14 and this low-resistance electrode 12 is connected lengthwise electrically with the transparent electrodes 11 through holes formed in the insulating film 13. At this time, the low-resistance electrode 12 is arranged between adjacent transparent electrodes 11 while covering the gap between the electrodes to function as a light shield film. Consequently, the wiring resistance of the long electrode part can be reduced without generating any short-circuit part and the display quality is improved.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain the driving method matching with gradation representation by applying a 1st voltage which orients respective picture elements in an area where an image is written in a 1st stable state, a 2nd voltage which orients them to a 2nd stable state, and a 3rd voltage for writing an image in the 1st stable state again. CONSTITUTION:When a ferroelectric liquid crystal cell 11 of such matrix picture element structure that bistable ferroelectric liquid crystal is sandwiched between a scanning electrode group 12 and a signal electrode group 13 is driven, three steps are set for voltage application. In 1st voltage application, an entire surface writing step for orienting picture elements A-C including the image uniformly into the 1st stable state is carried out and in 2nd voltage application, an erasure step for inverting those picture elements A-C into the 2nd stable step is performed. Lastly, an image writing step for orienting the desired picture element A in the 1st stable state again is carried out in 3rd voltage application. Consequently, the 'light' or 'dark' state is not inverted at the time of fast switching and this method is suitable to the gradation representation.

By repeating the above steps while working a conveying means 14, the cassette 24 reaches a terminal end, and when the cassette 24 is held by a carrying robot 12, air knives 20, 21 mounted to a delivery outlet 19 of the tank 16 work. And pure water is ejected from the nozzles 13 to the substrate 1 conveyed into the washing chamber 12 to wash it, and successively, the supply of the washing liquid to the substrate 1 is continued until immediately before it is carried out, and it is passed between air knives 17 and 18 installed above and below the carry-out port 30, thereby removing the washing liquid on the substrate 1.
