Abstract: The present invention discloses a communication station for communicating with a second station in a cellular-communication network using spread spectrum modulation wherein the second station transmits power commands to the communication station based on a received power level from the communication station, the communication station comprising: a transmitter having an adjustable transmitter power level for transmitting spread-spectrum signals; means for sequentially receiving power commands from a second station with which communication is being conducted; means for comparing a sequence of at least two of the received power commands to determine if the received commands in the sequence match; and means for adjusting the transmitter power level at a same rate as the reception of the power commands; wherein if the command sequence matches the transmitter power level is adjusted by a different amount than if the command sequence does not match. A method for adjusting a transmitter power level is also disclosed.

Abstract: A communication station includes an antenna system having multiple antennas and delay units for receiving a transmitted signal and outputting a combined signal having a known distortion imparted by the antenna system. The combined signal is in turn processed by a modem, which compensates for the known distortion in a manner which provides improved signal gain. The improved signal gain permits a reduction in transmit power and, accordingly, increased capacity of the communication station. Where the antenna system is to be remotely located from related signal processing equipment, separate units for the RF receiver/transmitter and the other signal processing equipment are provided so that the RF receiver/transmitter may also be remotely located along with the antenna system.

Abstract: The present invention relates to communications for communication systems. The communication includes an antenna system which is coupled to an RF receiver/transmitter which in turn is coupled to other signal processing equipment including at least one modem for processing individual CDMA communications. Preferably the antenna system includes multiple antennas and delay units and outputs a combined signal having a known distortion imparted by the antenna system. The combined signal is in turn processed by the modem. The modem compensates for the known distortion in a manner which provides improved signal gain. The improved signal gain permits a reduction in transmit power and, accordingly, increased capacity of the CDMA system. Where the antenna system is to be remotely located from the signal processing equipment, separate units for the RF receiver/transmitter and the other signal processing equipment are provided so that the RF receiver/transmitter may also be remotely located along with the antenna system. Preferably a connecting cable of at least 20 feet is provided which supplies RF signals and DC power to the RF receiver/transmitter from the other signal processing equipment.

Abstract: A communication method for use with a code division multiple access (CDMA) subscriber unit is disclosed. The method includes generating a first code wherein the first code has a first length and generating a second code wherein the second code has a second length greater than the first length and a period which is aligned with the length of the first code. A first radio frequency signal is transmitted from an antenna of the CDMA subscriber unit wherein the first radio frequency signal carries the first code at a first power level, at least a portion of the second code, and data. In an absence of an acknowledgement signal received by the CDMA subscriber unit, a power level of the first code is set to a second power level wherein the second power level is greater than the first power level.
