Abstract: PURPOSE:To provide an optical recording medium capable of high-density recording, free of toxicity and having excellent stability, by using a specified condensed polycyclic aromatic compound the transmittance of which is greatly changed by irradiation with rays, as a main constituent of a recording layer. CONSTITUTION:A condensed polycyclic aromatic compound having a basic skeleton of formula (1), preferably, tetrabenzopentacene, is used. Also, tetrabenzopentaphene, 5.6.11.12-tetraphenylnaphthacene or the like may be used. Each of these compounds has an absorption band at wavelengths of 400-800nm, and when being irradiated with rays in the band, it reacts with oxygen to be a peroxide which does not absorb rays in the band. A thin film of the condensed polycyclic aromatic compound is provided on a base, whereby the optical recording medium is obtained. The base 1 if formed from an organic resin material such as an acrylic resin and a polycarbonate resin, a glass, quartz, a ceramic or the like.
