A zig zag sewing machine comprises a series of cams mounted on a driving shaft, a follower carried by an oscillatory slide for selective engagement with the cams upon movement of the latter along the driving shaft, a member bearing against the slide for transmitting the oscillation thereof to the needle bar gate, an amplitude adjustment lever turnable by means of a knob thereon to vary the position of said member along the slide, said knob being carried by a spindle, rotation of which by the knob serving to shift the cams along the driving shaft. An arm 8, pivoted at 9 to a lever 10, has a longitudinal surface 7 slidably engaged by one end 6 of a connecting rod 4 pivoted at its other end to a needle bar gate 2. The length of connecting rod 4 may be varied by turning an eccentric pin 11. A spring 31 acts on gate 2 to bias end 6 against surface 7 and thereby a follower 24 on arm 8 against one of a pack of cams (25), (26), (27) slidably keyed to a driving shaft 17. An axial slot 23 at end 6 is engaged by a pin 22 on one arm 21 of a lever 20 pivoted on shaft 17. The other arm 32 journals an axially-slidable and inwardly spring biased spindle 34 which passes through a slot 36 in the machine frame 13 and carries a knob 35, manipulation of which serves to swing lever 20 for varying the position of end 6 along surface 7. An arm 56, pivoted at 55 to arm 32, engages one side of a four-sided cam 59 rigid with spindle 34, and is formed with a pair of lugs 57 engaging the lowest cam (27). A pin 43, transversely carried by spindle 34, normally engages a vertical groove 45 in arm 32, when follower 24 engages the highest cam (25) and lever 20 is turnable to engage pin 43 selectively in one of a series of notches 37 formed in a plate 38 pivoted at 39 and biased outwardly by a spring 40. If spindle 34 is turned to its leftmost position and drawn outwardly, a washer 48 fixed thereon enters a recess 51 in frame 13 to disengage pin 43 from groove 45. Spindle 34 may then be rotated axially through 90 degrees and released, when pin 43 enters a horizontal groove (46) in arm 32 and spindle 34 can be moved freely in slot 36. If spindle 34 is rotated a further 90 degrees, the third side of cam 59 raises arm 56 to engage follower 24 with the middle cam (26), and a yet further rotation of 90 degrees serves to engage follower 24 with the lowest cam 27.
