    Abstract: A wireless communication system (200) supports cell handover between terrestrial cells (250)and non-terrestrial cells(210-240), where each cell incorporates a wireless serving base unit serving a plurality of subscriber units with a communication resource. An airborne-capable subscriber unit (270) is capable of communicating to both terrestrial based cells and non-terrestrial based cells and receives transmissions from one or more base unit(s). The subscriber unit calculates a rate of change of the received one or more signal levels and determines whether to hand over communication from a non-terrestrial cell to a terrestrial cell based on the calculation. In a second embodiment, the subscriber unit recognizes a substantially simultaneous increase in received signal levels from a plurality of terrestrial base units and hands over the communication to a terrestrial base unit. A wireless subscriber unit and method for determining when to handover are also described. In this manner, by early determination of a handover need, calls are not dropped when the subscriber unit is landing, or severe interference caused when the unit is taking off.

    Abstract: An integrated circuit includes a linearizer circuit in which excessive delay is compensated. The linearizer circuit includes a power amplifier, forward and feedback paths, and a microprocessor. A signal from the power amplifier is routed by the forward path to be transmitted while a portion of the signal to be transmitted is routed back to the power amplifier via the feedback path. The microprocessor applies phase training signals to the forward path. The microprocessor uses the phase training signals to determine the amount of delay in the linearizer circuit and alters the frequency position of poles and zeros in the linearizer circuit to compensate for the delay. The gain of the linearizer circuit is also altered by the microprocessor depending on the measured delay.

    Abstract: Loop delay in a Cartesian feedback linearised transmitter is computed during a training episode from the settings of the phase shifter 242 required to achieve phase quadrature balance at two frequencies. The pole and zero frequencies of the loop filters 206,209, and the DC loop gain, are then adapted in dependence on the loop delay to maintain stability of the Cartesian loop while minimizing adjacent channel power. If the delay is found to be excessive the transmitter bandwidth may be reduced or the transmitter may be operated in an open loop mode. Improved loop stability allows a Cartesian loop transmitter to be used for broadband signals such as LTE (Long Term Evolution), WiMax, WCDMA and EDGE.

    Abstract: A wireless communication receiver 200 includes a primary RF quadrature mixer 242, 248 and chopping mixer stages 226, 228, 250, 252 (also referred to as dynamic matching mixers) located on each side of the primary quadrature mixer. When active, the chopping mixers translate second order intermodulation products out of the band of interest. The receiver also includes an off-channel signal detector 218. The off-channel signal detector 218 is arranged to detect when an off-channel interfering signal level exceeds a threshold and, in response, to activate at least one of the chopping mixer stages. The chopping mixers are de-activated, or bypassed, when the off-channel signal level is below a threshold, allowing the receiver to operate acceptably with a lower lP2 performance, but with beneficially reduced current consumption. The chopping mixers are controlled autonomously by the off-channel detector so that the receiver is able to react very quickly.

    Abstract: A Cartesian loop transmitter having isolator eliminator circuitry is presented. The isolator eliminator circuitry includes a set of low pass and wide band pass as well as narrow band pass filters for each of I- and Q-channels, root mean square detectors and dividers connected to a means for comparing. Signals from the means for comparing are received by a microprocessor which controls attenuation setting. The output level of the transmitter is adjusted by generating a small signal measuring an on-channel signal level and a small signal level and then calculating a ratio of the small signal to the on-channel signal. The attenuation setting is increased if the ratio exceeds a defined threshold.

    Abstract: A wireless receiver (100) demodulates a frequency modulated RF signal by a direct conversion procedure, including channels (110, 112) for producing in-phase and quadrature components.     Abstract: An antenna arrangement comprises an antenna 102 and a coupling 104 provided between the antenna 102 and a wireless modem card 101. The coupling 104 includes a balun connector 109, 150, 111 providing a parallel resonator at an operational frequency of the antenna. The balun 104 may comprise a coaxial cable 109 formed in an elongated loop with a cross over portion 111. This coaxial cable arrangement provides the inductive and capacitive connection and coupling required to create the desired resonance. The coaxial cable loop balun 104 may be moulded within a strong, flexible polymeric material as an insulating casing. The insulated balun module formed may be arranged as an extension of the modem card. The coaxial cable 109 may include a plug connector 105 which fits into a slot connection 106 formed in the card 101 with a stop member 107. The antenna 102 may have two elongate conductive wire monopole elements of different lengths arranged in an insulating jacket and connected via a conductive rod to a flexible joint 117 connected to the central conductor of the coaxial cable balun 104. The coupling arrangement provides high impedance improving signal gain and isolation and reducing the influence of computer generated noise.
