Abstract:
A silicon nitride-based powder composition that yields sintered bodies having a density of at least 3.15g/cm by pressureless sintering. The composition includes silicon nitride and an amount of bismuth oxide as a phase transition aid in addition to magnesium oxide, aluminium oxide, zirconium oxide and, optionally, silicon dioxide. The sintered bodies can be produced at temperatures of 1650 DEG C or less.

Abstract:
4,4'-Dihydroxy-alpha-alkylstilbenes of high purity were prepared by reacting at a temperature of from -20 DEG C to 20 DEG C a mixture of: (1) at least one alpha-haloketone; (2) at least one phenolic hydroxyl-containing compound or alkoxy-containing aromatic compound; and (3) at least one strong protonic acid or Lewis acid, such that the mole ratio of phenolic hydroxyl-containing compound or alkoxy-containing aromatic compound: alpha-haloketone(s) is from 0.1:1 to 1.9:1, and the mole ratio of phenolic hydroxyl-containing compound or alkoxy-containing aromatic compound: alpha-haloketone(s):strong protonic acid or Lewis acid is from 0.1:1:0.0026 to 1.9:1:0.95. The high purity 4,4'-dihydroxy-alpha-alkylstilbenes are useful for the advancement of epoxy resins, for the preparation of phenoxy resins and for the preparation of epoxy resins.
Abstract:
The subject invention provides a flangeless pipe joint for polymer-lined transfer or polymer-lined process piping, in particular slip-lined, loose-lined, interference fit, or swaged polymer-lined piping systems. The subject invention further provides a process for manufacturing such a joint from lined pipe products.
Abstract:
A blend of polycarbonate, chlorinated polyethylene and optionally other polymers which has a desirable balance of impact and ignition resistance properties. The other polymers include ABS and brominated epoxy resin. The chlorinated polyethylene may be grafted with an unsaturated monomer.
Abstract:
The performance of expoxy resins in several end-uses is enhanced by the presence of small quantities of hydrolyzed resin terminated by alpha -glycol groups. The invention is a process in which a mixture that contains liquid epoxy resin and water is reacted at elevated temperatures in order to hydrolyze epoxy groups into alpha -glycol groups, characterized in that: (1) the reaction temperature is between 130 DEG C and 200 DEG C; (2) the reaction mixture contains between 0.5 and 10 parts water per 100 parts resin by weight; and (3) the mixture contains 0 to 1 weight percent organic solvents and 0 to 100 ppm each of: organic acids, organic diacids, phosphonium compounds, and alkali or alkaline earth metals and their salts. The process raises the level of alpha -glycol groups in the resin, but uses no solvents or catalysts, so that it is easy to clean up the resulting resin.
Abstract:
Disclosed is a foam structure of desirable mechanical strenght made with a low molecular weight alkenyl aromatic polymer material and an inorganic blowing agent. The polymer material has an alkenyl aromatic polymer of a weight average molecular weight of 100,000 to 165,000. The foam structure can be made in processes with reduced pressure drop.
Abstract:
The present invention provides a process for producing a high molecular weight epoxy resin by polymerizing an epoxy resin having an average epoxide group number of two per molecule with a divalent phenol compound in the presence of a glycol ether having no hydroxyl group in alpha -position as a solvent. The preferable glycol ethers used in the present invention include propyleneglycol ethers such as propyleneglycol methylether, propyleneglycolmethylether acetate, propylenepglycol propylether and propyleneglycol monobutylether.
Abstract:
The subject invention pertains to a water-swellable polymer comprising the polymerization product of an alpha , beta -ethylenically unsaturated monomer in an aqueous phase, initiator, cross-linking agent, and polyvinyl alcohol, the polymerization product having been heated at a temperature greater than 160 DEG C, wherein the polyvinyl alcohol is less than 98 percent hydrolyzed, such that the polymerization product has improved whiteness.
