Abstract: Provided is a method for producing a sugar liquid using a cellulose-containing biomass as the starting material. Sugar liquid having a very low fermentation-inhibiting substance content is produced by a method comprising (1) a step in which a cellulose-containing biomass is hydrolyzed to produce an aqueous sugar solution and (2) a step in which the resulting aqueous sugar solution is filtered through a nanofiltration membrane and/or reverse osmosis membrane, the pure sugar liquid is recovered from the unpermeated side, and the fermentation-inhibiting matter is removed from the permeated side.

Abstract: Disclosed is a method for producing a xylo-oligosaccharide from a biomass containing xylan and cellulose, wherein the method is simple and a high xylo-oligosaccharide yield is achieved by suppressing xylo-oligosaccharide from being broken down to xylose. According to the method for producing xylo-oligosaccharide, a biomass containing xylan and cellulose is hydrolyzed by a cellulase composition that, at the time of hydrolysis, at least exhibits xylanase, cellobiohydrolase, and ß-glucosidase activities, but does not substantially exhibit ß-xylosidase activity.

Abstract: A method for producing a sugar solution, which comprises steps (1) to (3) mentioned below. The method enables the utilization of a hydrothermal treatment solution of a cellulose-containing biomass, which has been treated as a liquid waste, for the production of a sugar solution. Step (1): subjecting a cellulose-containing biomass to a hydrothermal treatment and then separating the resultant solution into a hydrothermal treatment solution and a cellulose-containing solid material. Step (2): adding a filamentous fungus-originated cellulase to the cellulose-containing solid material produced in step (1) to cause cellulose to be hydrolyzed, and then separating the resultant solution into a glycosylation residue and the sugar solution. Step (3): washing the glycosylation residue produced in step (2) with the hydrothermal treatment solution obtained in step (1) to cause the filamentous fungus-originated cellulase, onto which the glycosylation residue has been adsorbed, to be eluted in the hydrothermal treatment solution, and then subjecting the resultant solution to solid/liquid separation to produce a solution component containing the filamentous fungus-originated cellulase.

In this manner, the loss of a sugar toward the permeation side of the nano-filtration membrane can be reduced.

Abstract: A method for producing a sugar solution by treating a cellulose-containing biomass with dilute sulfuric acid, said method comprising the below-mentioned steps (1) to (4). In the method, a higher treatment effect can be achieved compared with those achieved in the conventional treatment methods with dilute sulfuric acid. Step (1): a step of treating the cellulose-containing biomass with dilute sulfuric acid and then separating the resultant solution into a dilute sulfuric acid-treated solution and a cellulose-containing solid material. Step (2): a step of adding a cellulase to the cellulose-containing solid material to hydrolyze the cellulose-containing solid material, thereby producing a sugar solution. Step (3): a step of filtrating the dilute sulfuric acid-treated solution through a nano-filtration membrane at a pH of 2.5 or lower to separate out a sugar-rich solution as a non-filtrate and collect an aqueous sulfuric acid solution as a filtrate. Step (4): a step of reusing the whole or a portion of the aqueous sulfuric acid solution obtained in step (3) in the treatment with dilute sulfuric acid in step (1).
