A ground station multiplexes audio digital data of a plurality of audio broadcasts, GUI data, and download audio data and transmits the multiplexed signal to a receiving side through a satellite. The receiving side displays a GUI screen corresponding to an audio broadcast. When a music information selection command is input on the display screen, an audio broadcast of a music program corresponding to the music information is selected. When a music information download command is input on the display screen, download audio data corresponding to the music information is output. The download audio data is stored to a storage device so as to download audio data corresponding to a desired music title.

A satellite direct radio broadcast system (10) is provided which assembles bits of broadcast programs into prime rate increments, several of which are assembled into a frame. Frames are divided into symbols which are demultiplexed into alternating one of a plurality of prime rate channels. The prime rate channels are demultiplexed onto a corresponding number of broadcast frequencies for transmission to a satellite (25). The satellite payload switches the symbols into time division multiplexed (TDM) data streams. The receivers (29) process the TDM streams using service control headers (SCHs) provided therein by broadcast stations. The SCHs facilitate transmission of different service components within broadcast channel frames, association of a primary broadcast channel with one or more secondary broadcast channels on a frame-to-frame basis, and the transmission of multiframe bit streams, or auxiliary data throughout a broadcast channel that are independent of a service, in contiguous or non-contiguous frames.

A data transmission device transmits a data broadcast using a narrow unused broadcasting band in a digital broadcast, and to record the data broadcast, which has been received, on a receiving side so that the receiving side can play back the data broadcast after a data stream is totally recorded. The transmission device generates a first data stream, which is recorded on a recording medium on a receiving side, and a second data stream including audio and video data, which is transmitted as a broadcasting program. The transmission device multiplexes the first and the second data streams and then transmits the multiplexed data stream. The transmission of the multiplexed data stream is controlled so that a transmission rate for the multiplexed data stream does not exceed the maximum transmission rate, and so that a transmission rate for the first data stream becomes lower than that for the second data stream. A receiving device records the first data stream on the recording medium, and permits the first data stream to be played back for use after the transmission completes.

A digital broadcast transmission system comprises a plurality of spaced transmitters (6). Each transmitter (6) receives signals for transmission from a master transmitter (2) along with a reference frequency (F ref). The reference frequency is used to generate the transmission frequency at each transmitter. At a receiver (12) conversion means can be used to enable signals from the master transmitter and from the other transmitter to be received.

A satellite direct digital broadcast system is provided which broadcasts selected Internet information such as news reports, weather reports and stock market rates, along with radio programs. Broadcast channels comprise Internet information and a service control header to identify the type of Internet information contained therein. User terminals (22) are provided which comprise a radio broadcast receiver (2) to receive programs broadcast via satellite (20). Audio programs are played on a speaker connected to a radio broadcast receiver (21). The user terminals (22) also comprise a multimedia device such as a personal computer (29) connected to the receiver. The multimedia device is programmed to generate a computer display which prompts a user to select a topic of Internet information. The multimedia device stores received packets and selectively retrieves packets to generate displays such as Web pages using those packets which correspond to the topic of information selected by the user.

A digital broadcast receiver comprising frequency specifying means (34-36) for specifying a receive frequency (frequency block), content type specifying means (37, 38) for specifying a broadcast content type, and control means (43) for controlling signal reception with a specified receive frequency and controlling such that a digital broadcast having a specified broadcast (program) content is identified among and selected from a plurality of digital broadcast signal according to a set of broadcast content type information. The control means (43), when a changed receive frequency is specified by the frequency specifying means (34-36), controls the signal reception with the new receive frequency and, if a broadcast content had been specified by the content type specifying means (37, 38) before the receive frequency was changed, controls such that a digital broadcast signal with the broadcast content specified by the content type specifying means (37, 38) is selected from a plurality of digital broadcast signals received at the new receive frequency.

A method for detecting the digital quality of a radio signal includes: receiving a radio signal including a digital portion modulated by a series of symbols each including a plurality of samples; computing correlation points between endpoint samples in cyclic prefix regions of adjacent symbols; and using the correlation points to produce a digital signal quality metric. Receivers that implement the method are also provided.

The present invention I related to a contents provider supplies encoded contents to a transmitting station, and broadcasts the encoded contents via a satellite. At a gas station inside a service area of the satellite, a base station to receive the contents from the satellite is disposed. The contents provider transmits to each base station decoding keys to decode the transmitted contents via the Internet. The base station relates the received contents to the decoding keys to store in a large capacity memory. When a vehicle stops by at the gas station, a vehicle-mounted apparatus communicates with the base station so as to download the contents, accumulate in a memory, and reproduce. This enables digital contents to be distributed to a mobile body with small-scale equipment.

A composite data stream (66) is stored on a data storage medium (72). The composite data stream (66) comprises a plurality of program channels to provide services such as satellite digital audio radio service (SDARS), among others. The program channels are multiplexed into the composite data stream, which also comprises control data for indicating where services are located in the composite data stream. A playback device (96) is configured to access the composite data stream (66) on the data storage medium (72), to demultiplex at least the program channels and to retrieve selected services from the data storage medium (72) in response to user inputs by using the control data.
