    Abstract: A system and method for determining and correcting the phase shift between the carrier signal in a QPSK modulated data signal (402) and the local oscillator signal (403) in a receiver (404, 420, 480) of the QPSK modulated data signal by correcting the receiver's symbol information phase reference to 0 DEG relative to the received carrier phase according to an output of a correcting means (480). Use is made of the unique seed property of pseudo random sequence generators (PRSG) (486, 502) in which inputting a "seed" of length equal to the polynomial order of the PRSG, to a first PRSG, which was taken from the output of a second identical PRSG, causes the first PRSG to output a sequence of bits which will be the same as those in the second PRSG following the seed values. By comparing the received data signals, actually the PRSG sequence output bit stream, with a sequence of bits generated by a first PRSG in the receiver, which are supposed to be identical because of the unique seed property, a determination of the phase shift ambiguity between the LO and carrier signals can be made, and subsequently corrected. The principles of the invention also work for signals that modulated using octal phase shift keying.

    Abstract: A satellite direct radio broadcast system (10) is provided which assembles bits of broadcast programs into prime rate increments, several of which are assembled into a frame. Frames are divided into symbols which are demultiplexed into alternating one of a plurality of prime rate channels. The prime rate channels are demultiplexed onto a corresponding number of broadcast frequencies for transmission to a satellite (25). The satellite payload switches the symbols into time division multiplexed (TDM) data streams. The receivers (29) process the TDM streams using service control headers (SCHs) provided therein by broadcast stations. The SCHs facilitate transmission of different service components within broadcast channel frames, association of a primary broadcast channel with one or more secondary broadcast channels on a frame-to-frame basis, and the transmission of multiframe bit streams, or auxiliary data throughout a broadcast channel that are independent of a service, in contiguous or non-contiguous frames.

    Abstract: A digital broadcast system is provided which uses a satellite direct radio broadcast system having different downlink modulation options in combination with a terrestrial repeater network employing different re-broadcasting modulation options to achieve high availability reception by mobile radios (14), static radios and portable radios (14) in urban areas, suburban metropolitan areas, and rural areas, including geographically open areas and geographic areas characterized by high terrain elevations. Two-arm and three-arm receivers are provided which each comprise a combined architecture for receiving both satellite and terrestrial signals, and for maximum likelihood combining of received signals for diversity purposes.     Abstract: A satellite sysem employing time diversity and a single frequency network of terrestrial re-radiation stations is provided wherein each terrestrial re-radiation station inserts a delay into a terrestrial signal. The delay allows the time of arrival of the early time diversity signal at the center of terrestrial coverage to coincide with the arrival of the corresponding late time diversity signal, thereby improving hand-off between terrestrial and satellite signals at a receiver. The delay also adjusts for distance differences between each terrestrial re-radiation station and the satellite and between each station and the center of the terrestrial coverage region. This adjustment optimizes the TDM-MCM reception by synchronizing at the center of the SFN the phase of the MCM signals re-radiated from the re-radiating stations of the SFN. The delay also compensates for the processing delay encountered when converting a satellite LOS TDM stream into a multicarrier modulated stream for transporting the satellite LOS TDM stream into a multicarrier modulated stream for transporting the satellite LOS TDM stream to user receivers and for the diversity delay between the early and late signals.

    Abstract: A satellite direct digital broadcast system is provided which broadcasts selected Internet information such as news reports, weather reports and stock market rates, along with radio programs. Broadcast channels comprise Internet information and a service control header to identify the type of Internet information contained therein. User terminals (22) are provided which comprise a radio broadcast receiver (2) to receive programs broadcast via satellite (20). Audio programs are played on a speaker connected to a radio broadcast receiver (21). The user terminals (22) also comprise a multimedia device such as a personal computer (29) connected to the receiver. The multimedia device is programmed to generate a computer display which prompts a user to select a topic of Internet information. The multimedia device stores received packets and selectively retrieves packets to generate displays such as Web pages using those packets which correspond to the topic of information selected by the user.
