Communicating is disclosed. A communication exchanged between an image source and a print destination is intercepted. The print destination is configured to support a wired Universal Serial Bus (USB) connection between the image source and the print destination and there is no wired USB connection between the image source and the print destination. A communication to inject is generated based at least in part on the intercepted communication. The injected communication is transmitted over a wireless USB connection between the image source and the print destination.

Abstract:
The disclosed embodiments provide a system that facilitates communication between a portable electronic device connected to a structured network and a printer. During operation, the system uses a peer-to-peer connection between the portable electronic device and the printer to confirm use of the structured network for subsequent communication between the portable electronic device and the printer. Next, the system enables use of the structured network for the communication by transmitting credentials for the structured network from the portable electronic device to the printer, wherein the transmitted credentials are used by the printer to connect to the structured network. Finally, the system transfers the communication from the peer-to-peer connection to a direct connection between the portable electronic device and the printer on the structured network.

The disclosed embodiments provide a system that performs a print job. During operation, the system detects a printer in proximity to a portable electronic device associated with the print job. Next, the system establishes a peer-to-peer connection between the portable electronic device and the printer and uses the peer-to-peer connection to obtain a set of printer attributes from the printer. If the printer attributes match the print job, the system establishes a direct connection between the printer and the portable electronic device and sends the print job to the printer over the direct connection, wherein the print job is executed using the printer.

In an image display device configured to be connected to a network, a method of communicating over the network with a remote device on the network is disclosed. The method includes receiving a message sent to a multicast address on the network by the remote device, wherein the message includes an instruction to the image display device to perform a function; and performing the function instructed by the message.
Abstract:
This invention describes a method for remote printing a file sent to a mobile device (e.g., a wireless electronic device, a mobile communication device or a mobile phone) using a wireless mechanism. The invention describes identifying a remote printer closest to a location of the mobile device with the required capabilities for printing the file using a printer system (e.g. a server, a network element of a wireless communication system, etc.). Another important issue resolved by the present invention is providing a required minimum level of security for the remote printing which can be requested by a user of said mobile device.
