    Abstract: 1404399 Ion-exchange ILLINOIS WATER TREATMENT CO 10 April 1973 [10 April 1972] 17208/73 Heading B1J A process for the regeneration of an anion exchange resin having cation exchange resin admixed therewith, which comprises converting the anion exchange resin to the hydroxyl form with a sodium hydroxide solution, converting at least a part of the cation exchange resin admixed with the anion exchange resin to the ammonium form with an ammonium hydroxide solution, and thereafter contacting the solution produced in the said conversion of the cation exchange resin with a second cation exchange resin in the ammonium form which has a greater affinity for sodium cations than for ammonium cations to provide an ammonium hydroxide solution substantially free of sodium cations. The ammonium hydroxide solution may be re-used. The second cationexchange resin may be separately regenerated. The process is applicable to incompletelyseparated anion-exchange resin from a mixed bed, such as a condensate polisher.

    Abstract: A high degree of water purity is obtained from a mixed-bed deionization process by minimization of cross-contamination of the cation and anion materials. After service, the materials are classified into superimposed uppermost, intermediate and lowermost layers above a perforate barrier in a separator vessel. The vessel has an elongate conduit having an inlet adjacent the barrier and an outlet outside the vessel. At least a major proportion of the material of the lowermost layer is passed through the outlet of the conduit and an interface between materials is detected. Thereupon, the conduit outlet is isolated from the conduit inlet so as to segregate in the conduit material from the intermediate layer. The ion exchange materials are then regenerated and re-mixed. The segregated material is independently removed from the conduit before the next regeneration cycle starts. For example, the material may be kept in the conduit, or transferred to and kept in a separate container while the rest of the materials are being regenerated.

    Abstract: A method for regenerating a weak base anion exchanger which comprises passing a regenerating chemical in an upward direction through a granular resinous mass of an exchanger, thereupon displacing the chemical and rinsing the mass with water. The regenerating chemical is a lime slurry having a concentration of 1 to 5% by weight, which is both supplied to and withdrawn from the granular mass in an evenly distributed flow with a flow rate of at least 10 m3, per hour, per m3 resin material (m3/h/m3), while the granular mass is in a compacted state.
