Abstract:
An acetoacetyl-functional silicon-based resin includes at least a fraction with a branched molecular skeleton containing silicon atoms and acetoacetyl functional groups chemically bonded to the branched molecular skeleton. The acetoacetyl functional silicon-based resin can be used to formulate coating compositions.
Abstract:
The present invention provides a water-based coating system that can be used to form a durable, abrasion resistant, tough, protective coating on a wide range of substrates. The coating system advantageously has excellent adhesion properties and can be directly coated onto stainless steel surfaces without requiring an intervening primer layer. Primer layers or other types of coatings can be used in combination with the coating system of the present invention if desired, however. The coating system is particularly effective for protecting metal-containing substrates such as intermodal, refrigerated cargo containers. The resultant coatings are flexible and impact resistant. Being water-based, the coating compositions have lower VOC emissions and less residual odor than solvent-based compositions.
Abstract:
A pigment grind dispersion contains non-adsorbed titanium dioxide particles dispersed in an aqueous emulsion containing a mixture of (a) water-insoluble film-forming first polymer particles that adsorb to titanium dioxide particles, the first polymer particle amount in the emulsion being less than the saturation level of adsorption when another polymer is not present, (b) water-insoluble film-forming second polymer particles that do not by themselves form composite particles with titanium dioxide particles, the second polymer particle amount in the emulsion being sufficient to inhibit or interfere with adsorption of the first polymer particles to titanium dioxide particles, and (c) extender particles. The pigment grind dispersion has a titanium dioxide pigment volume concentration of about 25 to about 50 and a titania composite ratio of about 32 to about 60.

A method of painting a five-sided container, which includes applying a water-based paint to the interior surfaces and the exterior surfaces of the container, and forcing heated air into the open side of the container to at least partially dry the paint on the interior surfaces and the exterior surfaces of the container.
Abstract:
A coating composition for a food or beverage can that includes an emulsion polymerized latex polymer formed by combining an ethylenically unsaturated monomer component with an aqueous dispersion of a water-dispersible polymer.
Abstract:
A pigment grind dispersion of titanium dioxide pigment-polymer composite particles is made by mixing titanium dioxide particles with an aqueous emulsion containing (i) less than a saturation level amount of water-insoluble film-forming first polymer particles that adsorb to the titanium dioxide particles, and (ii) an inhibiting or interfering amount of water-insoluble film-forming second polymer particles that do not adsorb to the titanium dioxide particles, wherein the pigment grind dispersion has a titanium dioxide pigment volume concentration of about 25 to about 50 and a titanic composite ratio of about 32 to about 60. The resulting titanium dioxide pigment-polymer composite particles can provide improved coating composition opacity compared to a coating composition that does not contain such composite particles, can employ reduced titanium dioxide amounts and less than a saturation level of the first polymer, and can provide improved storage stability.

A polyester polymer is provided that includes at least one pendant phenolic-containing group. In one embodiment, the polyester polymer is combined with an optional crosslinker and an optional carrier to form a coating composition suitable for use in coating articles such as packaging articles. The coating composition typically includes a resole phenolic crosslinker. In one embodiment, the polyester polymer has at least one phenolic-containing group that comprises an adduct of cardanol.
