Abstract: PURPOSE: A method and system for producing three-dimensional character animation are provided to easily apply key frame animation data to a three-dimensional virtual space. CONSTITUTION: A three-dimensional character animation system includes a database(10) for storing key frames that are made using motion-captured animation data and a tool, a motion editor(12) for correcting and changing the animation data off-line, and a character editor(14) for producing geometry of a three-dimensional character and converting the geometry into animation data fitted to the original size. The system further includes an animation engine(16) having a module that receives the data from the motion editor and character editor to generate animation data and varies the animation data, and an application unit(18) for receiving the animation data from the animation engine to display the data or apply the data to another application.
