Abstract:
A lubricant composition comprising a boric acid additive suspended and/or dispersed in an oil, grease, or polymer base. The inventive lubricant exhibits excellent resilience and load-carrying capacity over a wide range of temperature and use conditions.
Abstract:
A flywheel (10) having superconductor bearings (110) has a lower drag to lift ratio that translates to an improvement of a factor of ten in the rotational decay rate. The lower drag results from the lower dissipation of melt-processed YBCO, improved uniformity of the permanent magnet portion (120) of the bearings (110), operation in a different range of vacuum pressure from that taught by the art, and greater separation distance from the rotating members of conductive materials.
Abstract:
This invention relates to the identification, isolation, purification and manipulation of genetic stress response systems, and more particularly, to genes and expression products of those genes that are components of those systems. These components may be used to protect against potentially toxic stress factors. Stress factors include heat, alcohol and heavy metal ions. A family of stress protector proteins with apparent molecular weights about 100 kd, the hsp100 proteins, are an aspect of this invention. Other stress protector proteins are also within the scope of this invention to enhance or inhibit biological stress response. Applications of this invention to recombinant DNA technology, to commercial methods of food preparation and processing, and to methods of enhancing the stress response of plants and animals, are presented.
Abstract:
Disclosed are novel immunochemical reagents including non-neurotoxic peptides having amino acid sequence homology to loop sequences within residues 230 to 300 of the gp 120 glycoprotein of HIV-IIIB and antibodies thereto that are capable of in vitro inhibition of HIV-1 infectivity. The peptides and antibodies are useful in diagnostic assays and as active components of vaccine compositions for active and passive vaccination procedures.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for the quantitative recovery of actinide values from biological and environmental samples by passing appropriately prepared samples in a mineral acid solution through a separation column (16) of a dialkyl (phenyl)-N,N-dialylcarbamoylmethylphosphine oxide dissolved in tri-n-butyl phosphate on an inert substrate which selectively extracts the actinide values. The actinide values can be eluted either as a group or individually and their presence quantitatively detected by alpha counting.
