    Abstract: PURPOSE: To obtain the subject fluid consisting of a specific carbonaceous pow der and silicone oil, excellent in electroviscus characteristics in wide temperature area, having low initial viscosity, free from settling of disperse phase, excellent in re-dispersibility, long-term dispersibility, long-term stability and responsiveness in application of electric field and requiring a small consumed power. CONSTITUTION: This fluid comprises (A) 1-60wt.% of carbonaceous powder having dielectric (e.g. carbonaceous powder having 0.01-100μm average particle diameter and obtained by carrying out thermal polymerization of a condensed polycyclic aromatic compound consisting essentially of naphthalene as a main component in the presence of HF/BF3 catalyst, carrying out heat treatment of the resultant 100% mesophase pitch having 150-400 deg.C softening point at a temperature of 50-400 deg.C not higher than its melting point in an oxidizing atmosphere so as to give 5-25wt.% oxygen content in the pitch, then carrying out heat treatment of the pitch at 300-700 deg.C in an inert gas atmosphere to carbonize the pitch so as to give 3-20wt.% oxygen content in the pitch) and (B) a modified silicone oil (e.g. a polyether-modified, epoxy-modified, methacrylic acid-modified or carbinol-modified silicone oil) contained in an amount of 0.1-20% based on the component A and having 0.65-1000cSt viscosity at 25 deg.C.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To provide a fluid which has a high electroviscous effect to attain small power consumption and is excellent in response and stability in production. CONSTITUTION:This fluid comprises a particulate carbonaceous substance dispersed in an oily medium having electrical-insulating properties, and contains substantially no impurities which are positively or negatively charged upon application of an electric current. The content of these impurities is preferably not higher than 1,000ppm in the fluid.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain composite powder of carbon/layered clay mineral expected for uses as dispersing phase solid particles in electroviscous fluid, a filler for providing electric characteristics to high polfmers or improving rubber elasticity, a catalyst, a heat resistant material, an electrically conductive material for electrode materials, etc., and a precursor for synthesizing fine ceramic powder, and an electroviscous fluid containing the powder as a dispersing phase. CONSTITUTION:This composite powder of carbon/layered clay mineral contains 2-20wt.% carbon between layers of powder particles of layer clay mineral. The electroviscous fluid is composed of 1-60wt.% dispersing phase consisting of a carbon/layered clay mineral composite powder containing 2-20wt.% carbon between layers of powder particles of the layered clay mineral and having 0.01-100mum average particle diameter and 40-99wt.% liquid phase consisting of an electrical insulating oil having 0.65-1000cSt kinematic viscosity at ambient temperature.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To provide functional gel and a soft plastic body whose viscoelasticity can be extensively changed by applying an electric field. CONSTITUTION:At least one kind or more of fine powder bodies, whose mean particle diameter is 0.5-5.00mum, being selected from B-(1) the fine powder body, whose conductivity, under a dispersed state in a matrix phase, is one tenth or less of the conductivity of the matrix phase, (2) the fine powder body, whose conductivity, under the dispersed state in the matrix phase, is ten times or more of the conductivity of the matrix phase, and (3) the fine powder body being composed of two dimensional layer-like complex particles are dispersed in electrically insulating high polymer material, being selected from A-(1) a high polymer, whose viscosity is 10 centistokes or more, and (2) partially crosslinked high polymer gel-like medium, whose penetration is 40 or more at a room temperature, so as to produce an electrically responsive soft plastic body or electrically responsive gel.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To provide an electrically viscoelastic semi-solid substance which comprises a gel produced by dispersing specific carbon powder in a partially cross-linked electrically insulating polymer, which changes its viscoelastic characteristics by the application of electric fields and which has extremely low fluidity. CONSTITUTION:An electrically viscoelastic semi-solid substance comprises an electrically responsible gel produced by dispersing (A) 20-70 pts.wt. of carbon powder having an average particle of 0.1-500mum and a carbon/hydrogen atomic ratio (C/H ratio) of 1.2-5 in (B) 80-30 pts.wt. of a partially cross-linked electrically insulating polymer having a penetration of >=40 at room temperature. The component A may be dispersed in an electrically insulating oil or polymer having a viscosity of >=500 centistokes at room temperature.
