Abstract: A process for the preparation of a beta-silicon carbide powder of high purity which is suitable for use in the manufacture of semiconductor equipment and which has a content of 1 ppm or less of each atom harmful to the manufacture of semiconductor devices. The process comprises preparing a carbon- and silicon-containing starting mixture comprising (a) at least one siliceous material selected from liquid silicon compounds and solid siliceous substances derived from a hydrolyzable silicon compound, and (b) at least one carbonaceous material selected from polymerizable or cross-linkable organic compounds prepared in the presence of a catalyst which is substantially free from atoms harmful to the manufacture of semiconductor devices. The starting mixture comprises at least one liquid substance used as component (a) or (b). The starting mixture is then solidified by heating and/or by use of a catalyst or a curing agent. The resulting solid body is optionally heat treated in a non-oxidizing atmosphere at a temperature in the range of from 500 DEG C. to 1300 DEG C. for a period sufficient to remove volatiles. The cured and optionally heat-treated body is calcined in a non-oxidizing atmosphere under conditions sufficient to give beta-silicon carbide powder.

Abstract: Electrorheological fluids display swift and reversible increase in apparent viscosity under application of an electric potential difference to the fluid, and are composed generally of electrical insulating oily medium and dielectric fine-particles dispersed therein. In one of its aspects, the present invention relates to a carbonaceous powder for electrorheological fluid which can be employed as dielectric fine-particles to be dispersed in the oily medium and a method of making the carbonaceous powder. The carbonaceous powder for electrorheological fluid of the present invention comprises a carbonaceous powder having a number ratio of carbon atoms to hydrogen atoms (C/H) of 1.70-3.50 and 0.5-13.0% weight loss in a temperature range of 400.degree.C to 600.degree.C during heating the carbonaceous powder under nitrogen atmosphere from room temperature.

Abstract: A powder having good oxidation resistance and controlled electrical properties is obtained by dispersing minute particulates in a matrix phase to form composite particles. The minute particulates may be distributed uniformly, or non-uniformly such that the particulates are dense near the particle surface and sparse near the centre or vice versa. The minute particulates have a moderate conductivity of from 10 to 10 Scm , and the matrix phase has a low conductivity of up to 1/10 of that of the particulates. The powder can be dispersed in an insulating oily medium to form an electrorheological fluid.

Abstract: The electroviscous fluid is a suspension composed of a finely divided dielectric solid dispersed in an electrically nonconductive oil. The viscosity of the fluid increases swiftly and reversibly under an influence of electric field applied thereto and the fluid turns to a state of plastic or solid when the influence is sufficiently strong. The electroviscous fluid of the present invention comprises 1- 60% by weight of a dispersed phase of carbonaceous particulates having average particle size of 0.01-100 micrometer, and 99-40% by weight of a continuous liquid phase of an electric insulating oil having a viscosity of 0.65-500 centistokes at room temperature. The electroviscous fluid exhibits an excellent electroviscous effect even at a high temperature with a low electric power consumption together with maintaining the improved electroviscous effect for a long period of time.
