Abstract: In connection with a diversity handling moveover procedure for a cellular system having soft handover, allocation of a replacement diversity handling unit in a target node occurs only after a moveover decision has been made by a source node. Initially, an original or source diversity handling unit at the source node performs connection combining and connection splitting functions for legs of a mobile connection routed through plural base stations serving a mobile station. In accordance with movement of the mobile station, the source node makes the movement decision. The moveover decision can be based on factors such as base station utilization and/or actual and/or predicted directional movement of the mobile station. In some embodiments, the diversity handling moveover procedure involves selection among plural nodes for situs of the replacement or target diversity handling unit.

Abstract: A DS-CDMA cellular system is provided that employs two forward link transmission modes in parallel. A conventional transmission mode broadcasts a pilot channel that can be used by a conventional mobile station to estimate and detect a dedicated traffic channel. The second transmission mode transmits (via a sectorized or narrow lobe antenna system) all information required by a new generation mobile station to estimate and detect a traffic channel dedicated to that mobile station. Consequently, DS-CDMA system operators can introduce the use of adaptive array antenna systems or distributed antenna systems with new generation mobile stations, without terminating the use of the conventional mobile stations.

Abstract: A radio access network portion of a telecommunications network (18) which serves a mobile station (MS) is connecting to a core network. The radio access network portion has plural base stations (BS) serving respective plural cells (C), as well as plural control nodes (RNCs). The control nodes include a first control node (RNC1) for controlling a first group of the plural base stations and a second control node (RNC2) for controlling a second group of the plural base stations. A multicell area (MCA) includes cells served by at least some of the first group of base stations and cells served by at least some of the second group of base stations. The radio access network portion of a telecommunications network further has a paging control node which stores information regarding the multicell area. To page the mobile station in the multicell area, the paging control node (1) sends paging messages to each of the base stations serving the multicell area controlled by the paging control node: and (2) sends a paging message to any other control nodes which control base stations serving cells in the multicell area. The paging control node determines to which base stations and other control node(s) it should send paging messages by consulting a paging table (100). Preferably the paging control node is one of the control nodes of the radio access network. The paging control node is connected to the other control node(s) by an inter-control node link (32) over which the paging message is sent.

Abstract: A system for inhibiting the transmission of an access request message from a mobile station when either the system is incapable of granting access at the class of service desired by the mobile or access by the mobile at that class of service would increase the interference level of the target base station or a neighboring base station past its interference capacity. In one embodiment, each base station (BSj) broadcasts a maximum data rate access parameter and any mobile (MSm) receiving that parameter and seeking access at a greater data rate refrains from transmitting an access request message. In another embodiment, each mobile (MSm) calculates from its path loss to the base station (BSj) the power level it must transmit in order to gain access as well as the effect of that transmission on the interference level of both the target base station (BS1) and neighboring base stations (BS2, BSj). If transmission at the required power level would increase the interference level of any base station (BSj) past its maximum capacity, the transmission is inhibited. The system is most effective in CDMA mobile cellular radio systems.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for transporting a short message between a subscriber terminal and a digital telecommunications system is disclosed. A short message including user information and control data is created at the subscriber terminal. The short message user information is inserted into a user information field in a call setup message, in accordance with a standard call control protocol. A predetermined code is inserted into a locking shift field in the call setup message, which creates a short message control data field in the call setup message. The short message control data is inserted into the short message control data field in the call setup message, and the call setup message is transported between the subscriber terminal and the system. Also, a method and apparatus for transporting the short message between the digital telecommunications system and a short message service center is disclosed. The short message user information is inserted into a user field of an initial address message, in accordance with an ISUP protocol. The short message control data is inserted in an access transport field of the initial address message, and the initial address message is transported between the digital communications system and the short message service center.

Abstract: A method of controlling streaming of data , such as video , from a streaming server (150) to a User Equipment (UE) via a Radio Access Network (RAN) is provided. The method comprises receiving streaming data (300) from the streaming server, re shaping the received streaming data into bursts (310), and transmitting the bursts to the UE. The bursts are transmitted at a higher bitrates than the bitrates of the received streaming data. By re -shaping the streaming data into bursts streaming can be effected in a more radio- friendly way, since the UE may switch to a less resource consuming radio state in- between reception of data bursts delivered at high bitrates. Further , a corresponding computer program and computer program product , and a proxy unit for controlling streaming of data from a streaming server to a UE via a RAN , are provided.

Abstract: A method and an arrangement for re-establishing connectivity or reachability (116) between a server (100) and a client (108), for example following interruption or deterioration in the connectivity or reachability. A client and/or application handles connectivity or reachability with or towards at least one server comprising: establishing connectivity or reachability between said client and/or application (604, Figure 6) and said at least one server; transmitting a registration message (Figure 4) to said server comprising a client communication port identifier (624, Figure 6) and optionally a terminal address (620, Figure 6) of the client and/or application; and receiving a re-establishment message (Figure 5) using a different type of communication than the connectivity or reachability, the re-establishment message making or enabling said client and/or application re-establish said connectivity or reachability with or towards said at least one server. The communication port identifier may identify a WAP-push port and the address may be a MSISDN. The connectivity or reachability may comprise a TCP or TLS based connection and the re-establishment message may be sent using a different network such as using an SMS message. The connectivity or reachability may be established via or through a pinhole in a firewall (106). A deterioration in the connectivity or reachability may be monitored and detected by termination or expiry of an open state of the pinhole, which occurs for example when keep alive messages are not received or the firewall behaves in an unexpected way. A SIP or IMS platform may also be used.
