Abstract:
A plurality of digital services (V'1-V'N' and A'1-A'N') are carried in a multiplex data stream (162) to a plurality of remote locations. The multiplex data stream (162) comprises a continuous sequence of frames (156). Each frame (156) comprises two consecutive fields, and each field comprises a plurality of lines. A first group of the lines in each field defines a transport layer region of that field, and a second group of the lines defines a service data region. Portions of the service data region of each field are allocated to respective ones of the video services in proportion to respective data rates of each service. A multiplex control packet is generated (104) for each field that specifies, for each service, which portion of the service data region is allocated to that service. A multiplex map (104) is transmitted with each field, and therefore, the number and location of packets may be dynamically adjusted on a per field basis.
Abstract:
Apparatus for broadband signal distribution is equipped with a detector (555) for detecting when the apparatus is open and is further adapted to receive an entry code generator. If the entry code generator is not installed or, if installed, fails to generate an entry code which matches an authorized entry code stored in the apparatus, the apparatus enters a particular mode of operation whereby service provided by the apparatus is interfered with. The entry code generator comprises a circuit board for coupling with an electrical connector of the apparatus having at least one ear which precludes closure of a cover to the apparatus. A method of screening access to the apparatus from others than authorized service personnel includes waiting a predetermined period of time for coupling the access code generator before service is interfered with. Furthermore, the stored access code may be changed or the predetermined time varied by addressable command from a headend of a broadband signal distribution system.
Abstract:
The subscriber module is based on a sequential state machine which loads frequency control words corresponding to the jammed channels from a frequency control memory into each latch (406-412) on a cyclic basis. The basis cycle of the jamming machine includes the blanking of the frequency agile oscillator, the loading of a frequency control word into an associated latch and digital to analog converter (414-422) to hop the oscillator to the next frequency, and then the unblanking of the oscillator to generate the new frequency. The state machine is adapted to vary the hopping rate, the frequency at which the system moves from channel to channel, to provide flexibility in providing various jamming effectiveness. The hopping rate is programmable and addressable and can be adjusted over a considerable range without affecting the substantially constant blanking period between hops.
Abstract:
An off-premises method and apparatus for the interdiction of unauthorized channels of cable television. Each subscriber module is programmable and addressable to adjust the jamming parameters of that subscriber independently of other subscribers. The subscriber module loads frequency control words corresponding to the jammed channels from a frequency control memory (404) into each latch (406-412) on a cyclic basis. The state machine (432) is adapted to vary the sequence in which frequency control words are read out of the memory (404) to modify the jamming pattern. Corresponding to each frequency control word in the memory is stored one or more mode control bits (444) which are read out contemporaneously with the frequency control words. The mode control bits (444) are used to allow a single digital to analog converter to control one or more voltage control oscillators with different frequency ranges, or to allow control of a single voltage control oscillator with multiple frequency ranges.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus of providing periodic subscription television services where a microprocessor (300) controls a service denying switch (389) and a high frequency amplifier (387) such that service may be denied using the service denying switch (389) or the high frequency amplifier (387). In addition, the high frequency amplifier (387) may be set by the microprocessor (300) at various amplitude levels depending upon the number of television receivers and VCR's at the subscriber location. Also, the high frequency amplifier (387) may include bandpass filter circuits under microprocessor control for limiting service to the subscriber.
Abstract:
A combination surge and diplex filter is provided for a CATV distribution amplifier. In a first preferred implementation, an integrated surge and high pass filter section (40) is provided when the CATV amplifier is used only in the forward direction. Provision is made for a plug-in low pass filter section (45) which is matched to the high pass filter section (40). The plug-in low pass section (45) is used to form a diplex filter if the reverse direction capability of the CATV system is required from the distribution amplifier. In a second preferred implementation, the integrated surge and high pass filter section is segmented into a surge filter segment which is designed as a divisible part of the high pass filter section.
Abstract:
A system and method for using two simple transactions to enable the disconnection of unauthorized receiver terminals (108). This is accomplished in accordance with the invention by sending an addressed transaction to every known valid receiver terminal (108), giving each one the current authorization code. After this command has been sent several times to each valid receiver terminal (108), a global transaction is sent to all terminal containing the current and previous authorization codes. If any receiver terminal (108) receiving this transaction does not find a match between its stored authorization code it will deauthorize itself. Once into the transmission cycle (306, 308), and either of the transmitted authorization codes, it will deauthorize itself. Once into the transmission cycle, the current authorization code will become the previous authorization code and a new authorization code will be generated. The global command will be sent periodically while all the valid receiver terminals (108) are updated with the new authorization code.
Abstract:
A subscriber terminal apparatus for a television in an in-band subscription television system is provided. The subscriber terminal is adapted to receive a television signal including video, audio, and data information. A tuner of the subscriber terminal tunes channels of the television signal and an on-screen display control circuit selectively provides a display of characters on the television. A tuner control tunes the tuner to a channel having in-band data when the display of characters is provided on the television.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for processing fields (XA, XB, XC) of a video signal that are to be combined (28) into a frame, compressed and communicated over a digital communications system. The processing technique increases the spatial correlation between pixels at a cost of slightly reduced resolution in area of the frame where there is movement. The method employs a motion detector (14, 16, 18) to separate moving and non-moving areas of the frame. A simple combination of lines from a first field and second field can be used in static areas. In moving areas, a digital filter (20) is applied to the fields to increase correlation in the resulting field. A digital compression technique such as vector quantization is applied to the resulting frame-based signal.
Abstract:
A headend method and apparatus for a digital transmission system is provided which includes inputs for receiving first and second program information from first and second program sources and inputs for receiving first and second control information from first and second control sources. The first and second program information is applied to a switching circuit and a switch control controls the switching circuit to output channels of program information comprising combinations of the first and second program information for output to a subscriber. Processing circuitry allows for selectively providing the first and second control information to the channels output from the switching circuit.
