Abstract: A lubricating oil composition comprises a major proportion of a lubricating oil and a mixture of a major proportion of a phosphorus and sulphur containing extreme pressure additive and a minor proportion of pentachlorophenol. The extreme pressure additive is a reaction product of sulphur and phosphorous or a phosphorus sulphide and a hydrocarbon which is a paraffin, olefin, olefin polymer, mineral lubricating oil fraction such as bright stock, petrolatum or wax, a calcium or barium salt of an alkyl phenol sulphide or a glycol ester of mixed fatty and rosin acids, these acid mixtures occuring naturally in tall oil. Additional sulphur may be incorporated into the extreme pressure additive by heating, before or after phosphosulphurization with sulphur. The reaction product of the phosphorus sulphide and the lubricating oil may be stabilized by heating wiht an olefinic hydrocarbon such as di-isobutylene or a terpene, as described in Specification 687,417. The lubricating oil specified is mineral oil.

Abstract: A rubbery isoolefin-multiolefin copolymer having an iodine number less than 50 is mixed with carbon black and from 0.3 to 3.0 per cent of quinone dioxime or a metallic salt thereof or an N-substituted imine or diimine of quinone or naphthoquinone or a metallic salt thereof or a dinitroso compound and heated with simultaneous or subsequent agitation, the time and temperature being controlled so that a vulcanizable product is produced in which the carbon black is irreversibly bound to the copolymer through the oxime &c. Compounds specified are p-dinitroso benzene, toluene, xylene and cymene; 1,4-dinitroso naphthalene; 1,3-aliphatic dinitroso compounds; p-quinone and dibenzoquinone dioximes; and benzoquinone and naphthoquinone diimines used with an oxidizing agent such lead oxide. A suitable treatment is 15 minutes to 7 hours at 250 DEG to 450 DEG F., e.g. 30 minutes at 360 DEG to 380 DEG F. The heating and agitation steps may be done in cycles. Copolymers specified are those of isobutylene with butadiene, isoprene, hexadiene, dimethylbutadiene, piperylene, dimethallyl or cyclopentadiene, prepared at low temperatures using Friedel-Crafts catalysts. The mixture may contain also pulverized clay or silica, limestone dust, diatomaceous earth, iron oxide, additional carbon black, paraffin wax, petrolatum, lubricating or mineral oil, stearic acid, dibutyl or dioctyl phthalate, dyes and antioxidants. The products may be vulcanized by known methods. They may be used in making tyres, inner tubes, electric insulation, tank linings, rolls, upholstery, shoe soles and waterproof fabrics.

Abstract: 719,036. Asphaltic material. STANDARD OIL DEVELOPMENT CO. Jan. 23, 1953 [April 1, 1952], No. 2010/53. Class 55 (2) An asphaltic material of high softening point, ductility, and penetration properties is obtained from the distillation residue of petroleum oil by treatment within a temperature range of 350‹ to 600‹ F. with not more than 5 per cent of carbon tetrachloride and continuously removing the hydrogen chloride evolved. To ensure this the reaction is preferably conducted under refluxing conditions at atmospheric pressure. Or hydrogen chloride absorbents such as clay, talc or asbestos may be mixed with the residual oil. Liquid or semi-solid residues from the distillation under vacuum of the tar obtained by atmospheric distillation of petroleum, crude oil or from the fluxing of harder residual asphalts with heavy distillates, but not asphaltic residues which have been subjected to steam reduction or oxidation may be utilized as starting material. The product may be mixed with small quantities of natural or synthetic rubber, and polymerized hydrocarbons.
