    Abstract: A support for positioning a milker unit beneath a cow has a shaft which is vertically movably mounted on a base. An arm on the shaft supports a milker unit beneath a cow. Air pressure is applied to the shaft to hold the shaft and arm at a desired vertical position. A control automatically adjusts the vertical position of the support so that when the milker unit is attached to a cow's teats the weight of the milker unit is applied solely to the cow's teats. The control includes a pair of valves each connected to a supply of air under pressure. A first of the valves has an open position in which the amount of pressure applied to the support decreases and the support is permitted to lower. A second of the valves has an open position in which air from the supply moves the first valve from a normally closed position to the open position thereof. The control has a lever mounted on the arm for moving the second valve to the open position thereof when the milker unit applies force to the lever.

    Abstract: A rinser has a partial-vacuum chamber that constantly communicates with a partial-vacuum line during the rinsing process. The partial-vacuum chamber is separated from the operating space by a diaphragm with an aperture. A spring forces the diaphragm into a position in which is closes off an air inlet into the operating space. Inside the operating space is a float with a shift rod that has a seal at the top that closes off the aperture in the diaphragm as the float rises, interrupting the communication between the operating space and the partial-vacuum line. The breakdown of partial vacuum in the operating space produces a differential pressure on diaphragm, which lifts and releases the air inlet. The seal does not release from the diaphragm until it is forced against a thrust pin loaded by another diaphragm that communicates with the partial-vacuum chamber through one aperture and with the atmosphere through another aperture. The forces exerted on the first diaphragm allow large cross-sections to the atmosphere and to the partial-vacuum line opened and closed, even with a float that, because it carries out only a control function, can be very small.

    Abstract: 322,202. Egle, F., and Sharples, W. Aug. 1, 1928. Cow - milkers. - In milking- apparatus comprising small tubes or cannulas adapted to be introduced into the teats so that the milk can flow out naturally, the cannulas are made of comparatively short length, the part a which is adapted to be inserted into the teat and through the closing muscle being of a length of 24-45 mms. for cows and 15-30 mms. for goats or sheep and the diameters not more than 2.2 mms. for cows and 1.5 mms. for goats or sheep, such diameter being in the neighbourhood of onetwentieth of the length of the inserted part. The walls of the cannulas are from 0.1 to 0.2 mm. in thickness. The cannulas have enlarged lower parts a for connection to flexible tubes i connected to a milk receptacle c, preferably of glass, suspended adjustably beneath the animal. As shown, this receptacle may be an intermediate vessel connected by a lower tube k to a separate can or receptacle standing upon the ground. Each flexible tube i is provided with an external wire helix l abutting against a nut j and against an adjustable washer l or its equivalent, and this helix prevents the formation of kinks in the tube i and also serves to cause the tube to put slight upward pressure upon the cannula. A central tube c through the receptacle c is adapted to hold the parts of the receptacle together and to provide for the connection of the suspension chain d. The cannulas are preferably made of, or plated with, non-corrodible metal, such as silver or gold. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 6180/13 and 273,243.
