    Abstract: The present invention relates to a telecommunications system and method for connecting to a network and for routing data of a plurality of different data types between the network and subscriber terminals of the telecommunications system. The subscriber terminals are connectable to a central terminal of the telecommunications system via a transmission medium, the telecommunications system providing a number of communication channels arranged to utilise the transmission medium for transmission of data between the central terminal and the subscriber terminals. The telecommunications system comprises a transmitter having first transmission processing logic for employing a first transport mechanism to transmit data and second transmission processing logic for employing a second transport mechanism to transmit data. A switching element is then provided for routing data for transmission to either the first or second transmission processing logic dependent on first predetermined criteria, the first predetermined criteria comprising at least the data type of the data for transmission. In addition, a resource allocation logic is provided for determining based on second predetermined criteria which of the communication channels to allocate for use by the first transmission processing logic, and which of the communication channels to allocate for use by the second transmission processing logic. This approach provides a very flexible transmission mechanism for improving the efficiency of transmission of data through the telecommunications system.

    Abstract: The present invention provides a telecommunications system and method for connecting to a network and for routing data messages between the network and subscriber terminals of the telecommunications system. The subscriber terminals are connectable to a central terminal of the telecommunications system via a transmission medium, with the telecommunications system providing a number of communication channels arranged to utilise the transmission medium for transmission of data between the central terminal and the subscriber terminals. The telecommunications system comprises a transmitter within the central terminal for sending a data message destined for a particular subscriber terminal over at least one of the communication channels as a number of data blocks. Further, a frame generator is provided within the central terminal for generating a number of frames to represent each data block, each frame having a header portion and a data portion. The header portion is arranged to be transmitted in a fixed format chosen to facilitate reception of the header portion by each subscriber terminal, and is arranged to include a number of control fields for providing information about the data portion. In contrast, the data portion is arranged to be transmitted in a variable format selected based on predetermined criteria relevant to the particular subscriber terminal to which the data portion is destined. This approach provides a particularly flexible and efficient technique for transmitting data within the telecommunications system.

    Abstract: The present invention provides a wireless telecommunications system, subscriber terminal, method and computer program for routing data packets and voice calls between a network and the subscriber terminal of the wireless telecommunications system. The subscriber terminal is connectable to a central terminal of the wireless telecommunications system via a radio resource, the wireless telecommunications system providing multiple communication channels arranged to utilise the radio resource for the transmission of signals to and from the subscriber terminal, and a number of the communication channels being formed as a packet group for transmission of data packets to and from the subscriber terminal. The wireless telecommunications system comprises a packet controller connectable to the network and arranged to control the transmission of data packets to the subscriber terminal over the communication channels of the packet group. Furthermore, within the subscriber terminal, a plurality of communications units are provided to enable the subscriber terminal to transmit and receive signals over a corresponding plurality of the multiple communication channels, and a subscriber controller is also provided which is arranged, when no voice call is being made, to cause the plurality of communications units to monitor a corresponding plurality of the communication channels of the packet group, the subscriber controller being further arranged to issue a channels message to the packet controller identifying the communication channels within the packet group being monitored. When a voice call is to be made, the subscriber controller is arranged to assign one of the plurality of communications units to the voice call, thereby reducing the number of communications units available to monitor the communication channels of the packet group, and the subscriber controller is arranged to re-issue the channels message to the packet controller identifying the communication channels within the packet group being monitored. By this approach, the wireless telecommunications system can be optimised for the handling of data packets, whilst still facilitating the handling of voice calls without increasing the number of communications units that need to be provided within the subscriber terminal.

    Abstract: The present invention provides a subscriber terminal for communicating over a wireless link with a central terminal of a wireless telecommunications system, the subscriber terminal comprising a first signal processing unit associated with an antenna to transmit and receive signals over the wireless link at first frequencies within an operating frequency band. The first signal processing unit comprises a frequency converter for converting signals between said first frequencies and a second frequency. Further, a second signal processing unit is provided remote from the first signal processing unit and associated with an item of telecommunications equipment to pass signals between said item of telecommunications equipment and the first signal processing unit. The second signal processing unit is formed from signal processing circuitry which is independent of the operating frequency band, the signals being passed between the first signal processing unit and the second signal processing unit at the second frequency via a connection medium connecting the first and second signal processing units. Given this approach, the second signal processing unit can then be formed from signal processing circuitry which is independent of the operating frequency band.

    Abstract: The present invention provides a telecommunications system, and method of operation of such a system, the telecommunication system being arranged to be connected to a telecommunications network and to route telecommunications signals between the telecommunications network and a subscriber terminal of the telecommunications system.
