    Abstract: Each terminal of a plurality of network users is linked with a base station connected to a communications network, the links being established over a wireless resource comprising resource blocks. For each base station/terminal pair, a set of resource utilisation fractions is determined to indicate probabilities for establishing the link between that base station and that terminal via each of the resource blocks. A co-channel interference matrix is determined for each network component indicative of an expected interference from other network components when that network component receives network traffic via each of the resource blocks. The expected interference is probabilistically determined in dependence on the sets of resource utilisation fractions. In each network component, co-channel interference is suppressed in dependence on its co-channel interference matrix, and in each base station, links are dynamically established as required to handle network traffic by selecting from the resource blocks in accordance with the resource utilisation fractions.

    Abstract: The present invention provides a system for handling telecommunications signals passed between a first and second element of a telecommunications network, the first element having an interface for transmitting and receiving signals in a first protocol, and the second element having an interface for transmitting and receiving signals in a second protocol. The system of the present invention comprises a first interface unit for receiving a first telecommunications signal transmitted in one of said first and second protocols between said first and second elements, the first interface unit being arranged to separate traffic bearing channels from non-traffic bearing channels within the first telecommunications signal. A traffic management element is then provided for performing a cross-connection function to map the traffic bearing channels to the appropriate format for the other of said protocols, whilst a protocol conversion element is provided for performing predetermined protocol conversion steps on the non-traffic bearing channels in order to regenerate those non-traffic bearing channels in the other of said protocols. Further, a second interface unit is provided for combining the channels as output by the traffic management element and the protocol conversion element in order to create a second telecommunications signal in the other of said protocols, the second interface unit being arranged to output the second telecommunications signal. Preferably, said first protocol has a concentrated format, and said second protocol has an unconcentrated format.

    Abstract: The present invention provides a telecommunications system and method for connecting to a network and for routing data messages between the network and subscriber terminals of the telecommunications system. The subscriber terminals are connectable to a central terminal of the telecommunications system via a transmission medium, with the telecommunications system providing a number of communication channels arranged to utilise the transmission medium for transmission of data between the central terminal and the subscriber terminals. The telecommunications system comprises a transmitter within the central terminal for sending a data message destined for a particular subscriber terminal over at least one of the communication channels as a number of data blocks. Further, a frame generator is provided within the central terminal for generating a number of frames to represent each data block, each frame having a header portion and a data portion. The header portion is arranged to be transmitted in a fixed format chosen to facilitate reception of the header portion by each subscriber terminal, and is arranged to include a number of control fields for providing information about the data portion. In contrast, the data portion is arranged to be transmitted in a variable format selected based on predetermined criteria relevant to the particular subscriber terminal to which the data portion is destined. This approach provides a particularly flexible and efficient technique for transmitting data within the telecommunications system.

    Abstract: The present invention relates to a telecommunications system and method for connecting to a network and for routing data of a plurality of different data types between the network and subscriber terminals of the telecommunications system. The subscriber terminals are connectable to a central terminal of the telecommunications system via a transmission medium, the telecommunications system providing a number of communication channels arranged to utilise the transmission medium for transmission of data between the central terminal and the subscriber terminals. A switching element is then provided for routing data for transmission to either the first or second transmission processing logic dependent on first predetermined criteria, the first predetermined criteria comprising at least the data type of the data for transmission. In addition, a resource allocation logic is provided for determining based on second predetermined criteria which of the communication channels to allocate for use by the first transmission processing logic, and which of the communication channels to allocate for use by the second transmission processing logic. This approach provides a very flexible transmission mechanism for improving the efficiency of transmission of data through the telecommunications system.
