Abstract: In electrolytically refining W or Mo, typically containing not more than 10% impurities and including refining the products of the processes of Specification 918,167 and 1,070,162, the refined metal is deposited on a cathode of inert material using an anode of the impure metal and a molten electrolyte containing sodium chloride through which chlorine gas is passed to contact and dissolve the anode metal, preferably to give 5% by weight of the chloride of the metal in the bath. Typically the bath comprises an equimolar mixture of sodium and potassium chloride at 750 to 800 DEG C. the anode current density is less than 10 amps/ in. and the cathode current density of up to 35 amps/sq. in.

Abstract: In the continuous production of W or Mo from its oxide by electrolysis in a fused bath of at least one alkaline earth metal halide and a mixture of the oxides of at least one alkaline earth metal and of the product metal to cathodically deposit pure ductile and crystalline metal, the product metal oxide is replenished by addition as it is consumed and accumulation of surplus alkaline earth metal oxide is prevented by passing chlorine gas through the melt to convert the surplus oxide to the chloride. Typically the alkaline earth metal compounds used are those of Ca and preferably the baths contain 0.1 to 15% free CaO. In place of the mixture of alkaline earth and product metal oxides, there may be used the ores scheelite and powellite for W and Mo respectively, while for Mo production, the crude Ca Mo O4 obtained commercially by roasting MoS2 may be used. The temperature of the bath is 1000 DEG C. the applied voltage is 2.2 to 2.4 V, the cathode current density is 3.5 to 4.1 amps/in2, and chlorine is blown through the bath via a tube of quartz or silimanite (aluminium silicate). The cathode deposit is agitated in water to dissolve out adhering salt and washed in hydrochloric acid.

A modification of the removable magazine disclosed in the parent Specification for mounting a ribbon blade in a razor comprises two separate shells one containing a feed spool and the other a winding spool, each shell being connected to one end of a spacer element overlying the operative portion of the blade. As shown the magazine comprises a supply shell 24 and a take-up shell 25 held in spaced relation by the curved ends 40 of a spacer element 26 beneath which a ribbon blade 27 extends. The magazine is received as a unit in the razor head 11 a resilient latch 20 and a bridge member 15 being rotated about their pivotal connections 21 and 16 for receipt of the magazine. In the position of use the blade 27 and the overlying straight portion 30 of the spacer element are clamped between the bridge 15 and a lip 14 of the head 11. In a modification the spacer element is integral with the shells.
