    Abstract: Prepn. of condensn. prods. of formaldehyde is effected using a mesoionic catalyst of formula (I), where X = N,P or CR3; Y = O, S or Se, or NR4 or PR5; Z = N, P or CR6; R1,R2 = 1-30C alkyl, opt. substd. aryl, opt. substd. aralkyl, heteroaryl and/or nitrilo; R3,R6 = H, O, 1-3c alkyl, opt. substd. aryl or aralkyl, opt. substd. heteroaryl, hydroxyl, nitrilo and/or NH2; R4,R5 = O, 1-30c alkyl, opt. substd. aryl, aralkyl or heteroaryl, hydroxyl, nitrilo or NH2; or the gp. R2 forms a 2-5C alkylene or alkenylene, or a 6-14C arylene, bridge with R4 or R5; or the gp. R6 forms a 3-4C alkylene or alkenylene bridge with R4 or R5. Also claimed is a mesoionic tetrazolium cpd. of formula (II). USE/ADVANTAGE - The catalyst gives a different spectrum of prods. compared to the known thiazolium catalysts, esp. glycoaldehyde and glyceraldehyde, useful for the prepn. of ethylene glycol, glyoxal, and glycerine. In an example, 4 g of paraformaldehye, 0.201 g of nitron, 15.8 g of ethyl acetate and 0.2 g of molecular sieve were heated at 80 deg. C. for 15 mins. There was a conversion of 29.4 %, with a selectivity of 86.2 % for glycoaldehyde and of 10.1 % for glyceraldehyde.
