    Abstract: The invention relates to a process for the preparation of halogenated arylsiloxanes of the general formula (HalnAryl)xSi(OArylHalm)4-x by reacting silicon halides of the general formula (HalnAryl)xSiHal4-x with halogenated phenols of the general formula HalmAryl-OH in the presence of an alkyl aromatic compound having 8 to 12 C atoms, with stirring and in the presence of nitrogen-containing bases of the general formula (as acid binder) in which R , R and R in each case represent C1-C20-aryl radicals, it being possible for the substituents on the tertiary N atom to be identical or different, at temperatures below 30 DEG C, 1 mole of the compound IV being employed per mole of halogen to be eliminated and the precipitate which consists essentially of the adduct ÄR R R +NHÜHal and the desired reaction product being subjected to extraction with water, giving the desired product (insoluble component), which is subsequently dried.

    Abstract: The invention relates to a process for the removal of the metal component of the catalyst from a polyphenylene ether solution produced in the preparation of high-molecular-weight polyphenylene ethers from monohydric phenols by oxidative coupling reaction with oxygen in the presence of a catalyst complex comprising a metal salt and an organic amine in the presence of a solvent and optionally an activator, by treatment with a precipitant which is a solid chemical reagent which is insoluble in the polyphenylene ether solution, and has been applied to an inert support substance which is adsorbent with respect to the precipitated substances. The precipitant is an organic P-, S-, O- or N-containing compound or an inorganic P or S compound which is soluble in water or aqueous acid solution, the support substance is a solid material of any desired shape with a specific surface area of from 50 to 1500 m /g and a porosity of between 50 and 75% which is insoluble in water, acid and organic solvents.

    Abstract: The catalyst is removed in the preparation of high molecular weight polyphenylene ethers from monohydric phenols, which are alkyl-substituted at the two ortho-positions but not at the para-position and may or may not be alkyl-substituted at the meta-position, by an oxidative coupling reaction with oxygen at from 15 DEG to 50 DEG C. in the presence of a catalyst complex obtained from a copper salt and an organic amine, in the presence of from 1 to 20 parts by weight of a solvent per part by weight of the monomeric phenol, and in the presence or absence of an activator, and removal of the metal component of the catalyst from the polyphenylene ether solution with a complex-forming or chelate-forming compound in aqueous solution, in the presence or absence of reducing and stabilizing substances and assistants for accelerating the interphase reactions and for phase separation, by a method in which the continuous removal of the copper catalyst is carried out in one or more mixer-settler stages at a phase volume ratio of the organic phase to the aqueous phase of from 1:0.1 to 1:1.0, preferably from 1:0.4 to 1:0.6.

    Abstract: A process, carried out without a diluent or in solution, in more than 2 reaction zones, for the continuous preparation of rubber-modified polymers of vinylaromatics, wherein a monomeric aromatic vinyl compound and an elastomeric polymer, in an amount of from 3 to 16% by weight based on the monomer, are polymerized, in the absence of a free radical initiator, but in the presence of a mercaptan as a chain transfer agent, at from 80 DEG to 180 DEG C. in a first reaction zone, with stirring, up to a maximum monomer conversion, Umax, given by the equation Umax=K-1 where K is the amount of rubber in % by weight based on monomer, and, in a second reaction zone, polymerization is continued, with stirring, to a conversion of up to about 50% by weight, after which a chain transfer agent is introduced in an amount of from 0.01 to 0.2% by weight, based on vinyl-aromatic monomer, and polymerization is continued, if appropriate in more than one reaction zone, up to a monomer conversion of less than 85% by weight. The polymer is treated in a devolatilization zone to remove vinyl-aromatic monomer and solvent, if any, and these constituents are recycled to the process. The process produces products which exhibit good gloss coupled with good mechanical properties, and which can be employed for conventional applications.
