    Abstract: A thermoplastic mass is granulated by extruding it through a nozzle plate into the chamber pressurised by gas and filled with fine droplets of fluid, of a water-ring cutter. On emerging from the nozzles, the thermoplastic is sheared off by cooled, rotating knives, the particles being superficially chilled, projected centrifugally into the ring of fluid set up on the inner wall of the chamber, and washed out by it. Unwanted cooling of the extrusion head is prevented by the continuous circulation across its face of a stream of gas picked up by the revolving knives and rid by centrifugal force, by any droplets of fluid. There is no adhesion between the granules or linkage by filaments. Excessive wear on knives and extrusion plate is avoided.

    Abstract: The catalyst is removed in the preparation of high molecular weight polyphenylene ethers from monohydric phenols, which are alkyl-substituted at the two ortho-positions but not at the para-position and may or may not be alkyl-substituted at the meta-position, by an oxidative coupling reaction with oxygen at from 15 DEG to 50 DEG C. in the presence of a catalyst complex obtained from a copper salt and an organic amine, in the presence of from 1 to 20 parts by weight of a solvent per part by weight of the monomeric phenol, and in the presence or absence of an activator, and removal of the metal component of the catalyst from the polyphenylene ether solution with a complex-forming or chelate-forming compound in aqueous solution, in the presence or absence of reducing and stabilizing substances and assistants for accelerating the interphase reactions and for phase separation, by a method in which the continuous removal of the copper catalyst is carried out in one or more mixer-settler stages at a phase volume ratio of the organic phase to the aqueous phase of from 1:0.1 to 1:1.0, preferably from 1:0.4 to 1:0.6.

    Abstract: 1455663 Mixing liquids BASF AG 26 March 1974 [27 March 1973] 13255/74 Heading B1C In a process for mixing two liquids having a viscosity difference of at least two powers of 10 in terms of poise, a portion of the high viscosity liquid is. mixed with low-viscosity liquid in a dynamic mixer to form a premix having a viscosity less than two powers of 10 bellow that of the higher viscosity liquid, and the premix mixed with the remainder of the high viscosity material in a static mixer. Preferably the mixing of the premix in the dynamic mixer is carried out at a sheer rate of at least 0.1 sec -1 to form a premix containing not more than 60% by weight of the low viscosity material, and the mixing in the static mixer is carried out at a sheer rate of not more than 10 4 sec -1 . In an apparatus the high viscosity liquid 1 is branched off through a line 4 and metering pump 5 to a junction 6 where it is joined by low viscosity liquid metered by a pump 8. The premix so formed is mixed in a toothed disc mixer 12 and fed to the main high viscosity stream at 17, the total stream being subdivided into partial streams which are displaced and recombined in a static homogenizer 20. In modifications a second high viscosity material 3 .may be added to the branch line 4 of the first, and a third high viscosity liquid material 14 with or without solids content to the junction 6 or to the premix at 18; further low viscosity material may be added to the main stream of the mixture at 19 or through a line 10 to the static homogenizer 20. The invention may be used for mixing lubricants, expanding agents, stabilizers and plasticizers with molten polymers; examples relate to nylon 6 and the mixing of a paraffin oil with polystyrene.
