    Abstract: A method for increasing the effectiveness of a microbicide is described, wherein a microbicide and an N-alkyl heterocyclic compound are applied to a substrate or aqueous system subject to the growth of microorganisms. The N-alkyl heterocyclic compound is applied in an amount effective to increase the microbicidal activity of the microbicide. The N-alkyl heterocyclic compound has the formula: The variable "In" ranges from 5 to 17, and the heterocyclic ring defined by is a substituted or unsubstituted ring having four to eight members. Microbicidal compositions are described where the microbicide and the N-alkyl heterocyclic compound are present in a combined amount effective to control the growth of at least one microorganism. Methods for controlling the growth of microorganisms on various substrates and in various aqueous systems are also described. The combination of the microbicide and the N-alkyl heterocyclic compound is particularly useful as a microbicide in the leather industry, the lumber industry, the papermaking industry, the textile industry, the agricultural industry, and the coating industry, as well as in industrial process waters.

    Abstract: Se proporciona un método para controlar contaminantes orgánicos, tales como xilanos, brea o ambos, que interfieren con el blanqueo de fibras y/o causan otras interferencias en los sistemas de fabricación de papel. El método incluye poner en contacto las fibras antes de cualquier blanqueo de las mismas con una composición que contiene una enzima hemicelulolítica y un adyuvante de remoción de contaminantes orgánicos para liberar los contaminantes orgánicos de las fibras. Las fibras tratadas luego se pueden blanquear y además utilizar, por ejemplo, en la fabricación de papel. La presente invención también se relaciona a las composiciones de tratamiento y a los productos de papel hechos con los materiales de fibra tratados con estas composiciones.     Abstract: A method is provided for controlling organic contaminants, such as xylans, pitch or both, that interfere with bleaching of fibers and/or cause other interference(s) in papermaking systems. The method includes contacting fibers before any bleaching thereof with a composition which contains a hemicellulolytic enzyme and an organic contaminant removal adjuvant to liberate the organic contaminants from the fibers. The treated fibers can then be bleached and further used, for example, in making paper. The present invention also relates to the treatment compositions and to paper products made with fiber materials treated with these compositions. A method of enhancing enzymatic degradation of a substrate as well as formulations and systems for achieving the same are also provided. Various substrates can be degraded or otherwise processed, including biomass, paper mill sludge, and animal hides. Enzymatic degradation can be enhanced by including one or more polymeric surfactants.

    Abstract: ASA sizing emulsions containing low and high molecular weight cationic polymers are described. An ASA sizing emulsion of the invention contains 25 to 99 percent by weight water, 0.003 to 60 percent by weight ASA, 0.003 to 50 percent by weight of a cationic polymer mixture, and 0 to 2 percent by weight of a surfactant. The cationic polymer mixture contains 75 to 99 percent by weight of an ionene polymer and 1 to 25 percent by weight of a high molecular weight polyethyleneimine polymer. In the sizing emulsion, the ASA has a particle size ranging from 0.5 to 3 microns. A method for sizing paper using such an emulsion is also described.

    Abstract: The present invention relates to a method to inhibit bacteria from adhering to a submergible surface. The method contacts the submergible surface with an effective amount of at least one N-alkyl heterocyclic compound to inhibit bacterial adhesion to the submergible surface. The present invention also relates to a method for controlling biofouling of an aqueous system. This method adds an effective amount of at least one N-alkyl heterocyclic compound to inhibit bacteria from adhering to a submerged surface within the aqueous system. This method effectively controls biofouling without substantially killing the fouling organisms. The N-alkyl heterocyclic compound used in the method of the invention has the following formula: The substituent R1 is a C8-C20 alkyl group. The heterocyclic ring is a 5-8 membered heterocyclic ring where X is O, NH, or CH2. R2 is methyl, hydroxymethyl, or hydroxyethyl. The integer n ranges from 0 to 3. The present invention also relates to a composition containing N-alkyl heterocyclic compounds and useable in the above methods. The compositions comprise at least one N-alkyl heterocyclic compound in an amount effective to inhibit bacteria from adhering to submergible or submerged surfaces.
