    Abstract: Systems and methodologies are described that facilitate scheduling over multiple hops in a wireless communication network. Radio resources can be partitioned into sets of sub-frames that can be allocated statically and/or dynamically. Statically allocated radio resources can be reassigned over time based on the loading on each hop and/or throughput imbalance. In addition, dynamic assignment of sub-frames to each hop can be based on traffic or channel conditions. Moreover, the radio resources can be dynamically allocated in a distributed scheme, wherein a base station controls the scheduling of resources, or a centralized scheme, wherein a relay station controls the scheduling of resources. Furthermore the allocation of radio resources can be transparent or explicit. In the transparent case, the access terminal listens directly to the base station, and the relay station does not transmit control information, such as DL or UL assignments. Conversely, when the allocation of resources is explicit the relay station does transmit control information.

    Abstract: Method and apparatus for estimating reverse link loading in a wireless communication system. The reverse link interference is measured and reverse link receiver noise is measured. The reverse link interference is compared to the reverse link receiver noise, for example, by dividing the interference power by the receiver noise power. The reverse link receiver noise can be measured in an orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) system by nulling transmission from access terminals within the cell and nearby during a null time and frequency interval. Power measure in the null time and frequency interval is receiver noise power. The reverse link interference can be measure by several means. For example, local null time and frequency intervals can be designated. The access terminals within the cell null their transmissions during the local time and frequency intervals. Access terminals outside the cell continue to transmit during the local time and frequency intervals. Power measured in the local time and frequency interval is interference power. As another example, interference power can be measured by subtracting pairs of pilot symbols that are contiguous to each other in time or frequency.

    Abstract: Techniques are provided to support fast frequency hopping with a code division multiplexed (CDM) pilot in a multi-carrier communication system (e.g., an OFDMA system). Each transmitter (e.g., each terminal) in the system transmits a wideband pilot on all subbands to allow a receiver (e.g., a base station) to estimate the entire channel response at the same time. The wideband pilot for each transmitter may be generated using direct sequence spread spectrum processing and based on a pseudo-random number (PN) code assigned to that transmitter. This allows the receiver to individually identify and recover multiple wideband pilots transmitted concurrently by multiple transmitters. For a time division multiplexed (TDM)/CDM pilot transmission scheme, each transmitter transmits the wideband pilot in bursts. For a continuous CDM pilot transmission scheme, each transmitter continuously transmits the wideband pilot, albeit at a low transmit power level. Any frequency hopping rate may be supported without impacting pilot overhead.

    Abstract: Efficient pilot transmission schemes for multi--antenna communication systems are described. In general, MISO receivers prefer a pilot transmitted in one spatial direction, and MIMO receivers typically require a pilot transmitted in different spatial directions. In one pilot transmission scheme, a first set of T scaled pilot symbols is generated with a first training vector and transmitted (e.g., continuously) from T transmit antennas, where T > 1. If MIMO receiver(s) are to be supported by the system, then at least T-1 additional sets of T scaled pilot symbols are generated with at least T-1 additional training vectors and transmitted from the T transmit antennas. The training vectors are for different (e.g., orthogonal) spatial directions. Each MISO receiver can estimate its MISO channel based on the first set of scaled pilot symbols. Each MIMO receiver can estimate its MIMO channel based on the first and additional sets of scaled pilot symbols.

    Abstract: Systems and methodologies are described that facilitate mitigation of interference in a wireless communication environment. Terminals can utilize interference information provided by neighboring sectors to adjust transmit power and reduce interference. Access points can provide two sets or types of interference information. The first type can be transmitted over a large coverage area, requiring significant overhead and limiting the transmission rate. Access points can also provide a second set or type of interference information directed at smaller coverage area, such as an area proximate to the edge of the supported sector. This second type of interference information can be utilized by terminals that include the access point within their active set. The second set of interference information can be provided at a higher rate than the first set due to decreased overhead requirements. Terminals can utilize both sets of interference information to adjust transmit power.
