    Abstract: A communication session between a node seeking network access and a NAS (Network Access Server) is established by having only few exchanges of messages. Upon detecting a physical link between the node and the NAS, the NAS immediately sends an authentication request message to the node. In response, the node sends a request message which includes all parameters options, in addition to responding to the authentication request message, for link configuration and network access control. The NAS then picks and chooses the parameter options and sends back the selected options in a reply message to the node. If the selected options in the reply message meet a threshold, the node straightforwardly transmits user data for network access via the NAS.

When a handoff is performed, such that the communications of the mobile MT2 device is handed off to a new BS/MSC, the Um interface will undergo PPP configuration renegotiation without causing the Rm interface also to undergo PPP configuration renegotiation. Similarly, when the Rm interface undergoes PPP configuration renegotiation, the Um interface will not undergo PPP configuration renegotiation.

    Abstract: A method for selectively maintaining a compression state and applying a compression technique after a PPP renegotiation on a U m interface of a wireless communication network. A communication device (104) receives packetized data transmitted from a terminal device (102) which is coupled to the communication device via an R m interface. Upon determining that the received packetized data comprises compressed data, the communication device determines (S340) whether connection information exceeds a highest numbered decompression slot from a plurality of decompression slots on said U m interface. The communication device sets up (S330) a local decompression slot, in the communication device, which corresponds to the connection information in order to maintain said compressionsate, wherein the local decompression slot is set up in response to determining (S325) that the connection information exceeds the highest-numbered decompression slot. The communication device decompresses (S350) the compressed packetized data when it receives compressed packetized data containing said connection information.

Each of the resultant multiple byte streams is then provided to one of multiple RLP connections having different retransmission and delay properties. The RLP connection selected for sending data from each application is based on the grade of service most appropriate for the application. At the receiver, the data from the multiple RLP connections is provided to a single PPP stack.

    Abstract: This disclosure is directed to techniques for selection of wireless network interfaces for data communication within an access terminal. The techniques may rely on a set of interface selection rules to identify network interfaces that are eligible to serve a particular communication application or the type of traffic forwarded on behalf of another device. In addition, each network interface may be assigned a priority. Upon identifying eligible interfaces, e.g., interfaces that satisfy all of the interface selection rules, the techniques may involve selection of the eligible interface having the highest priority. The assigned priority may be dynamically adjusted based on the connection state of the interfaces, prioritization according to changes in system latency, interface cost, and the like.
