Abstract:
A fiber optics communications system is provided. The system includes a transmitter apparatus located at a first location and having a plurality of laser transmitters and a plurality of optical switches coupling optical signals from the laser transmitters to optical fibers. A receiver apparatus is located at a second location remote from the first location and includes a plurality of receivers and a plurality of optical switches coupling optical signals from the optical fibers to the optical receivers. A first control circuit controls the switches of the transmitter apparatus in accordance with conditions at the first and the second locations. A second control circuit controls the switches of the receiver apparatus in accordance with conditions at the first and second locations. The backing up of a plurality of transmitting lasers by a single back up laser and the backing up of a plurality of receivers by a single back up receiver are also described.
Abstract:
A receiver is described for optical signals which are amplitude modulated with broadband radio frequency signals. The receiver includes an optical detector which receives the incoming optical signal and generates a radio frequency electrical signal which varies with the power level of the incoming optical signal. This electrical signal is applied to a pair of amplifiers which are connected in a push-pull relationship. A gain control circuit controls the gain of the amplifier pair.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for generating and collecting viewing statistics in a cable television system (100) is provided. A system manager (310) transmits one or more record times downstream to one or more remote terminals (120, 315a-315c) indicating a future point in time at which the terminal (120, 315a-315c) is to record the viewing statistics. The remote terminals (120, 315a-315c) store the one ore more record times in memory (503) and when the record time matches the current real time, the remote terminals (120, 315a-315c) store in memory (503) the viewing statistics. Thereafter, in response to a polling signal from the system manager (310), the set-top terminals (120, 315a-315c) transmit the previously recorded viewing statistics along with a time code corresponding to the time at which the viewing statistics were recorded upstream to the system manager (310), and the system manager (310) processes this information accordingly.
Abstract:
A compensation control for an off-premises CATV system includes an automatic gain control and an automatic slope control. A first feedback control (302, 306, 310) is used to compare a first portion of a television signal to a first reference level and null the error. A second feedback control (304, 308, 312) is used to compare a second portion of the signal to a second reference level and null the error. In a second embodiment, the second feedback control differences first and second portions of the television signal. The reference level for automatic gain control is equal to the attenuation between the off-premises equipment and the subscriber premises plus the desired level at the subscriber premises. The level of a jamming signal is set to fall within a range of power levels related to the reference level.
Abstract:
A receiver is described for optical signals which are amplitude modulated with broadband radio frequency signals. The receiver includes an optical detector (20) which receives the incoming optical signal and generates a radio frequency electrical signal which varies with the power level of the incoming optical signal. This electrical signal is applied to a pair of amplifiers (100, 200) which are connected in a push-pull relationship. In a preferred embodiment, a tuning network (500) is connected between the two amplifiers for optimizing the amplification of a selected band of radio frequencies.
Abstract:
A decoder for descrambling encoded satellite transmissions comprises an internal security element (1019) and a replaceable security module (1014). The program signal (SYS) is scrambled with a key (KOM1) and then the key itself is twice-encrypted and multiplexed with the scrambled program signal. The key (KOM1) is first encrypted with a first secrete serial number (SSN1) which is assigned to a given replaceable security module (1014). The key is then encrypted with a second secret serial number (SSN0) which is assigned to a given internal security element (1019). The internal security element (1019) performs a first key decryption using the second secret serial number (SSN0) stored within the internal security element (1019). The partially decrypted key (ESSN1(KOM1)) is then further decrypted by the replaceable security module (1014) using the first secret serial number (SSN1) stored within the replaceable security module (1014). The decoder then descrambles the program using the twice-decrypted key (KOM1). The replaceable security module (1014) can be replaced, allowing the security system to be upgraded or changed following a system breach.
Abstract:
A multiplication circuit for use in an FM television transmitter and receiver is provided. The multiplication circuit includes a limiting circuit for limiting a subcarrier supplied thereto and a dividing circuit coupled to the limiting circuit and dividing theoutput of the limiting circuit by a predetermined factor. A mixer is coupled to the dividing circuit and mixes the output of the dividing circuit with the subcarrier.
Abstract:
A terminal apparatus for use in a cable television system which provides a plurality of channels capable of being tuned for display at a television receiver is provided. The apparatus includes a memory for storing data for generating a plurality of predetermined character screens and for storing deauthorization data, a character generator for generating character screens from the stored character screen data at the television receiver, a deauthorization mechanism responsive to the deauthorization data in the memory means for deauthorizing selected ones of the plurality of channels, and a controller for controlling the memory and the character generator, and for composing at least one predetermined character screen for display at the television receiver in accordance with the deauthorization of a channel by the deauthorization mechanism.
Abstract:
Apparatus for use in a television terminal selectively provides a background audio or video signal or both to accompany display of a screen of textual information. The apparatus comprises a tuning circuit for tuning to a predetermined background channel determined by user selection of a particular textual information screen for display. As a result, dinner music may accompany textual informative screens related to the choice of a meal. Alternatively, instructions on how to purchase a movie might be accompanied in the background by the movie. Either the movie picture or the sound or both may accompany the instruction screen.
Abstract:
A method of transferring data from a plurality of remote terminals to a central location over a communication network is disclosed. First random numbers are respectively generated for each of the remote terminals. A mask value is then determined. The random numbers associated with the remote terminals are compared with the mask value to determine whether a respective terminal attempts to transfer data to the central location. In a disclosed embodiment the method is used to locate new terminals in a hotel or hospital system.
