SOLUTION: The projector is equipped with light sources 10R, 10G and 10B emitting light, optical modulation devices 20R, 20B and 20B modulating the light emitted from the light sources 10R, 10G and 10B in accordance with an image signal, and a projection device 40 projecting the image formed by the optical modulation devices 20R, 20G and 20B to a surface to be projected 50. PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new control method for a light-emitting part and a light-modulating device for a projector. SOLUTION: A frame period includes a plurality of sub-periods, and each sub-period includes a plurality of color periods. A control part of the projector allows the light-emitting part to emit a plurality of color light sequentially in the plurality of color periods in each sub-period. The control part also controls the modulating state of a plurality of light-modulating elements, included in the light-modulating device according to a plurality of pixel data. Specifically, the modulating state of the light-modulating elements in the specific color period in each sub-period is controlled, according to the specific color data included in the pixel data. A first kind of ON period, in which the light modulating elements can be set into the ON state in the specific color period of the first kind of sub-period, is set shorter than a second kind of ON period in which the light-modulating elements can be set into the ON state in the specific color period of the second kind of sub-period. SOLUTION: The illuminator has a light source part 11R supplying coherent light, and a phase modulation part 13R modulating the phase of the coherent light from the light source part 11R and making it incident on a surface to be irradiated. The phase modulation part 13R changes a phase modulation pattern while generating diffracted light in accordance with the phase modulation pattern of the coherent light, thereby making the light rays, which are adjusted in intensity for every unit area set on the surface to be irradiated, on the surface to be irradiated. PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a light source device which is capable of projecting a laser beam well, and to provide a projector unit. SOLUTION: In the light source device of the projector unit, a nonlinear optical element 312 is arranged between a laser beam source 311 and a VBG 313. The VBG 313 is equipped with a Bragg layer 313A that reflects a laser beam of oscillation frequency with a reflection factor of 95% or above, and a first dielectric multilayered film 313B which transmits a laser beam of conversion wavelength. By this setup, the oscillation frequency of a laser beam can be turned into a narrow band by the Bragg layer 313A of the VBG 313, the laser beam can be improved in both oscillation efficiency and wavelength conversion efficiency, and the good laser beam can be projected from the light source device. SOLUTION: This is an image display apparatus that displays an image by scanning a plurality of light beams. The apparatus is provided with a light source section 121R for supplying a plurality of light beams and a scanning section 200 for scanning the plurality of light beams from the light source section 121R, in the X direction of a first direction in a region to be irradiated and in the Y direction of a second direction nearly orthogonal to the first direction. The light source section 121R is designed to array in parallel the plurality of light beams at least in one of the X and Y directions. Among the spot positions and their in-between positions, formed in the region to be irradiated by the plurality of light beams, at least one position is made a reference point. On the basis of the position of the reference point moving with the scanning of the plurality of light beams, in the region to be irradiated, the light source section is driven in a manner adjusting the light quantity of the two or more light beams among the plurality of light beams.
