Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To permit miniaturization and the projection of a bright image with low voltage by providing the device with a liquid crystal display element including a specific org. electric field light emitting element and a transmission type liquid crystal panel for controlling the transmission of the light emitted from the surface of this org. electric field light emitting element. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display element 1a is housed in the projection lens 30 and a casing 40. The projection lens 30 forms the image emitted from the liquid crystal display element 1a on a screen 50. The liquid crystal display element 1a has the org. electric field light emitting element 10 and the transmission type liquid crystal panel 20 and is so constituted that light modulation to allow the transmission of the light from the org. electric field light emitting element 10 or not to allow the transmission thereof by a change in the voltage of the control signal supplied to a drive circuit is made possible. The planar org. electric field light emitting element 10, which allows low-voltage driving and is large in light quantity, is used. As a result, the small-sized projection type liquid crystal display device capable of projecting the image brighter than heretofore may be obtd.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fore-placed type surface lighting system of low power consumption superior in visibility, both when lighting is on and when it is off, capable of illuminating a curved surface and a three-dimensional object, and also superior in terms of artistic design. SOLUTION: A curved surface is provided within a range of conditions that a light beam 9 entering from an illuminant 2 via an end face 14 of a light guide plate 1 can be guided within the light guide plate 1. The light beam 9, when it reaches projecting shapes 11 provided on a plate surface 15, goes out of the light guide plate 1 and is irradiated to an illuminated body 3. By this constitution, the light guide plate 1 has functions of projecting light to the illuminated body 3 and of transmitting light reflected by the illuminated body 3 substantially without dispersion.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a panel-like illumination device having an independent power source. SOLUTION: Light emitting diodes 13 are arranged on the end surface of a light transmission plate 11 consisting of a transparent plate formed by dotting recessed shapes 12 on the surface thereof on an observer side. The power source is constituted of a solar battery 14 and a secondary battery 15. Then, a photovoltaic current generated by the solar battery 14 is detected by a photovoltaic current detection circuit 18. Based on the magnitude of the photovolataic current, the brightness of a periphery is judged by a brightness discrimination circuit 19. When the periphery is dark, a turning-on circuit 16 is turned on so as to turn on the diodes 13. Light made incident from the end surface of the plate 11 is totally reflected by the recessed shapes 12 and transmitted through the plate 11 downward so as to illuminate a liquid crystal display device 21 being an object to be illuminated.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To thin surface lighting system and to thin a liquid crystal display having it. SOLUTION: An organic electroluminescent(EL) light source 10 is disposed in close proximity to an incoming light end surface of a light conducting plate 15. The organic EL light source 10 comprises a transparent electrode film 12 laminated on a glass board 11 one by one, and an organic EL element 19 composed of an organic luminescent layer 13 and a reflection electrode film 14. The organic EL element 19 having a width we of about 0.1mm and a length nearly equal to a width W of the light conducting plate 15 (e.g. 30mm) is formed in a stripe shape. A width wg of the glass board 11 can be made thinner about 1mm. Therefore, a thickness of the light conducting plate 15 can be made thinner about 1mm. Light incident on the light conducting plate 15 is uniformly emitted from an outgoing light surface 18 to optimize a structure of the light conducting plate 15 so that an illuminating device can be used for a liquid crystal display element.
