Abstract:
A device is provided for reliably generating a wide range of known concentrations of an oxidizing or a reducing gas in an inert carrier gas. The gas-generating electrode (42) is sandwiched between a porous diffusion membrane (44) and an ion-exchange membrane (38) which has been preconditioned by exposure to a source of a precursor ion for the gas to be generated, and the minimal void volume defined between the ion-exchange membrane and porous diffusion membrane and surrounding the gas-generating electrode is filled with a solution of the precursor ion for the gas to be generated.
Abstract:
An apparatus and method are disclosed which allow the size of a particle (20) suspended in a medium to be determined virtually independent of the materials' refractive index. The apparatus includes a means (12) for producing a beam of collimated light (22), a means (13) for exposing the particles (20) to the collimated light (22), thereby scattering the light, a detector (14, 31), and a means (17, 41, 43) for preventing any of the light which was scattered by the particles (20) from reaching the detector (14, 31). The method of the invention comprises passing the medium containing the particle (20) through a beam of collimated light (22), so that the light which contacts the particle (20) will be scattered; deterring the light which was scattered by the particles (20) from being detected; detecting the light which was not scattered by the particle, and determining the size of the particle (20) from the decrease in the light intensity incident on the detector (14, 31).
Abstract:
Optically-active, amphiphilic, free-radical addition copolymers having an optically-active hydrophobic portion and an ionic hydrophilic portion are effective resolving agents. This utility is based on a unique combination of properties, viz., water solubility, chirality and amphiphilicity, i.e., having a dual hydrophobic and hydrophilic nature.
Abstract:
Complexes of bicyclopolyazamacrocyclophosphonic acid compounds with a metal ion, e.g. Sm, Lu, Gd, Pm, La, Yb, Ho, Y, Sc, Re, Re, Pr, Tc, Ga, Ga, Rh, Ru, In, In or In ion, are disclosed. The complexes can be covalently attached to a biologically active molecule, e.g. an antibody or antibody fragment, to form conjugates. The complexes and conjugates are useful as radiopharmaceutical agents for therapy and/or diagnostic purposes. Processes for preparing the complex and conjugate are discussed.

Abstract:
Bicyclopolyazamacrocyclophosphonic acid compounds are disclosed which may form inert complexes with Gd, Mn or Fe ions. The overall charge of the complex can be varied to alter the in vivo biolocalization. Such complexes can be covalently attached to an antibody, antibody fragment or other biologically active molecule to form conjugates. The complexes and conjugates are useful as contrast agents for diagnostic purposes. Processes for the preparation of the ligand, complex and conjugate are also disclosed.
Abstract:
The present invention concerns bis(aminophenoxy)-alpha-substituted stilbenes represented by Formula (I) wherein each R is independently hydrogen or a hydrocarbyl or hydrocarbyloxy group having from one to about 10, preferably one to about 4, carbon atoms, a halogen atom, preferably chlorine, bromine or fluorine, a nitro group, a nitrile group or a -CO-R group; each R is independently hydrogen or a hydrocarbyl group having from one to about 10, preferably one to about 6, carbon atoms; X is a (a) or (b) group, each R is independently hydrogen or a hydrocarbyl group having from one to about 10, preferably one to about 2, carbon atoms; R is a hydrocarbyl group having from one to about 10, preferably one to about 2, carbon atoms and may be chlorine or a nitrile group, when n has a value of zero; and n has a value of zero or one. Bis(aminophenoxy)-alpha-substituted stilbenes are prepared by reacting a dihydroxy-alpha-substituted stilbene with a halonitrobenzene in the presence of a basic acting substance such as potassium carbonate and hydrogenating the resulting bis(nitrophenoxy)-alpha-substituted stilbene to convert the nitro groups to amino groups. These compounds are useful as curing agents for epoxy resins.
Abstract:
A process for forming a partially polymerized DVS resin comprising heating DVS monomer in a solvent at a concentration of DVS monomer in the solvent such that: (a) the DVS resin, when applied and polymerized in a thin layer on a solid substrate does not craze; and (b) the DVS resin, is rendered photocurable by the addition of at least one photosensitive agent in an amount sufficient to convert the mixture to an organic-insoluble solid upon exposing the mixture to photon radiation and the film retention upon development with a solvent is at least 50 percent. The process may be more readily scaled up to a commercial scale, may generate little or no low molecular weight fraction that must be separated from a precipitating solvent and may make a novel DVS resin which may be used to form a film on a substrate which retains its integrity.
Abstract:
Elastic fibers and fabrics made from homogeneously branched linear ethylene polymers are disclosed. The elastic fibers and fabrics can be used to produce structures that can have recycle compatibility between elastic and non elastic components. The novel fibers have at least 50 percent recovery at 100 percent strain. The fibers and fabrics are especially useful in making fabricated articles and components thereof (e.g., disposable diapers).

Abstract:
The present invention relates to a latex copolymer comprising in polymerized form one or more ethylenically unsaturated poly(ethylene glycol) monomers represented by formula (I) where R is an ethylenically unsaturated functional group, R is H, OH or OCH3, and n is from 3 to 20, and one or more comonomers. Paper coating compositions comprising this latex copolymer impart improved sheet gloss and dry pick characteristics to the coated paper. Additional embodiments include a process for the preparation of the ethylenically unsaturated poly(ethylene glycol) monomer-containing latex copolymer and the paper coating composition.
