Abstract: A controlled failure rope and method of making the same. The controlled failure rope comprises first and second portions. The first portion is formed of a first material having a first set of tension failure characteristics. The second portion is formed of a second material having a second set of tension failure characteristics. The first and second sets of tension failure characteristics differ such that, when the rope is subjected to tension loads above a tension threshold, the first portion of the rope begins to fail before the second portion of the rope, therefore providing a prior indication of possible rope failure before the rope becomes completed separated.

Abstract: A reinforcing structure designed for handling compression stress states when the structure is molded into a composite. The structure, specifically a wrapped cord with metallic filaments contained therein, is suitable for both compression and tension load forces. The reinforcing structure has a core comprising a plurality of essentially straight, nested filaments arranged in parallel, the filaments forming a line of contact with adjacent filaments that extends along the length of the filaments. Abstract: A synthetic plastic rope includes a selected number of first components having a relatively high elongation characteristic and second components whose elongation characteristic is considerably lower. In one form of the invention, the rope has a central core in which the first components are located, and a plurality of surrounding strands principally constituted of second components. In other forms, the rope does not have a core and there are a plurality of strands braided (plaited) or laid (twisted) together primarily consisting of the low elongation components, but having high elongation components distributed substantially symmetrically and which in the aggregate have substantially less mass than the low elongation components.

Abstract: A method for determining a state of an elevator system suspension traction apparatus having at least one electrically conductive cord with a first end and an opposite second end, the cord having a wave impedance. A signal generator is electrically connected to the cord first end and a terminating resistor having a first resistance value matched to the wave impedance of the cord is electrically connected to the cord second end. The method includes the steps: inputting an, in particular alternating, electrical excitation signal of the signal generator into the cord first end; at least one of measuring a reflection signal of the excitation signal at the cord first end, and measuring a transmitted signal of the excitation signal at the cord second end; and determining the state of the suspension traction apparatus by comparing the excitation signal with at least one of the reflection signal and the transmitted signal.

Abstract: There are provided a rope which is excellent in a wear resistance and a bending resistance, and a manufacturing method of implementing the rope.A rope (1) including a yarn twisted by using a raw thread (5) of a polyethylene fiber (6) having an ultrahigh molecular weight and a strand (2) twisted by the yarn and subjected to steel-making through the strand (2), and a resin coating layer for protecting the rope (1) is formed on an external surface of the yarn, an external surface of the strand (2) or an external surface of the rope (1). A method of manufacturing the rope (1) includes a pretreating step I of removing an oil content contained in the rope (1) and performing an affinity enhancing treatment over a surface thereof and a resin coating step II of forming a resin coating layer for protecting the rope (1) on an external surface of the yarn, an external surface of the strand (2) or an external surface of the rope (1). The resin coating layer for protecting the rope (1) is formed. For this reason, impurities such as sand in the sea or the like is prevented from intruding into an inner part of the rope (1). Therefore, a life of the rope (1) can be enhanced.
