Abstract:
A method for transmitting control data on a downlink and/or uplink channel in a base station and/or mobile station in a mobile communication system. In one embodiment, the base station determines whether there is downlink channel data to transmit to a mobile station. If there is no data to be transmitted over the downlink channel for a predetermined time period, the base station drives a random gating position selector to determine a random gating slot position, gates on the control data at the determined slot position, and gates off the control data at other slot positions. The random position selector determines the gating slot position by calculating a value x by multiplying a system frame number (SFN) of a received signal by a specific integer; selecting n bits starting from a position which is at an x-chip distance from the start point of a scrambling code, which has a period equal to one frame, before a plurality of gating durations used in generating a downlink signal; and determining a gating slot position of a corresponding gating slot group by performing a modulo operation on the selected n bits, where the module operation is by the number of slots in a gating slot group.
Abstract:
A direct sequence spread spectrum receiver samples an incoming signal and stores the sample in memory. Prior to sampling and storage, the incoming signal is translated to an IF signal. Also prior to storage, the IF signal is corrected for a frequency offset signal. The frequency offset may be caused by many sources, Doppler shift or local oscillator error, for example. Once the signal is corrected for the frequency offset, the signal sample is stored in memory. The signal sample is read from memory as necessary to process the signal. Such a receiver is useful in global positioning satellite (GPS) signal processing where the incoming signal contains several satellite transmissions encoded with CDMA encoding.
Abstract:
A system for reducing receiver power consumption in communication system having a transmitter (141) and one or more receivers (146) schedules periodic message in "slot". Each receiver is assigned a slot during which it monitors the transmission. The transmitter (141) transmits messages to the receiver only during the assigned slots. The receiver is in an "active state" during its assigned slot. During the "inactive state", which is the time period between successive occurrences of its assigned slot, the receiver may perform any action not requiring coordination with transmitter. At a time during the inactive state shortly before the assigned slot, the receiver applies power to these components and performs initialization. Such initialization may include reacquiring a pilot channel signal to which the receiver may synchronize itself if its timing signal have drifted out of synchronization with those of the transmitter during the preceding inactive state.
Abstract:
The present invention discloses a method and apparatus for implementing matched filter in a system using QPSK modulation. In the present invention, a multiplier is changed as a multiplexer by using the characteristic of the pilot sequence (or training sequence) so as to implement the matched filter.
Abstract:
Techniques for cell reacquisition and reselection that increases time spent in low-power mode while effectively monitoring neighbor cells are disclosed. In one aspect, one or more windows around the expected location of the serving cell are searched in the period of time prior to the page indicator. In another aspect, intra-frequency neighbor cells are searched first to determine reselection candidates. Various other aspects are also presented. These aspects have the benefit of increasing time spent in low-power mode, thereby reducing power consumption and increasing standby time.
Abstract:
A pilot searcher for CDMA and GPS signals. In one aspect, the searcher is operated in conjunction with a sample buffer in a "real-time" or "off-line" mode. The writing/reading of samples to/from the buffer may be performed in a TDM manner via a common port, and samples may be decimated and packed prior to storing in the buffer. In another aspect, the overall search for pilots is partitioned into a number of tasks, with each task corresponding to a search over a given sample segment and based on a particular set of parameter values. The tasks may be stored in a queue and performed one at a time based on their order in the queue. Prior to performing a new task, the parameter values for that task is downloaded to a set of configuration registers. The parameters may be ordered and linked such that only new values are downloaded.
Abstract:
A novel and improved method for performing paging is described. In one embodiment of the invention a searcher (206) is used to detect spread spectrum signals. The searcher (206) searches several pilot channels associated with several base stations. A controller (210) selects at least two base stations that have associated pilot signal (501-02) energies exceeding a threshold (510). A demodulator (208) demodulates for paging channels transmitted by the at least two base stations. The paging channels are transmitted over substantially overlapping time slots. A combiner (212) combines a result of the demodulation generated by demodulating each of the paging channels.
Abstract:
A signal reception method including method and apparatus for receiving a signal, downconverting the received signal through multi-tone down conversion to form an intermediatesignal, and decoding the intermediate signal to extract data. In an embodiment, the received signal may include multiple transmission bands of a multi-code (MC)- CDMA signal, each of which occupies a different spectrum. Each of the transmission bands also includes an information channel signal. When the received MC-CDMA signal is down converted through multi-tone down conversion, the intermediate signal is formed. The intermediate signalincludes a common spectrum that includes an information channel from a plurality of transmission bands. When the intermediate signal is decoded, data from a plurality ofinformation channel bands is extracted. The method and apparatus may be implemented in a multi-mode MC-CDMA/CDMA receiver.
Abstract:
In a receiver having at least two fingers, the fingers tracking at least one path of a multipath channel, a method includes the steps of forming a finger block of at leat two of the two fingers and jointly tracking the fingers of said finger block. The step of jointly tracking includes the steps of generating direction metrics (12) of each of a set of possible directions of joint movement (16) of the fingers of the finger block, selecting one of the direction metrics (12) according to a predetermined criterion, and moving the fingers of the finger block in the directions indicated by the selected direction metric.
