Abstract: 1536262 Ion-exchanger regeneration ASAHI GLASS CO Ltd 2 Nov 1977 45593/77 Heading B1J [Also in Division C7] A spent fluorinated carboxylic-type cation exchange membrane in the alkali or alkaline earth metal salt form is converted to the acid or C 1-5 alkyl ester form and thereafter heattreated for re-use. A membrane from a chloralkali cell may be pulverised before conversion and then melt-pressed into a new membrane in the heating step. Conversion may involve acid treatment optionally in the presence of a polar organic compound and then esterification either direct or via the acid chloride or anhydride form. The membrane may contain reinforcing fibrils based on PTFE.

Abstract: Polymer-bound photosensitizing catalysts are effective in the heterogeneous catalysis of various photosensitized chemical reaction, such as photooxidation reactions, photodimerisation reactions, and photocycloaddition reactions, and are thereafter readily separated from the reaction medium and reaction products by simple filtration. The polymer-bound photosensitizing catalysts comprise the nucleophilic displacement reaction product of (A) a polymeric material having attached thereto an available leaving group which is capable of being displaced in a nucleophilic displacement reaction with a nucleophilic reagent and (B) a photosensitizing catalytic compound containing in its molecule a nucleophile which is capable of displacing the leaving group attached to the polymeric material in a nucleophilic displacement reaction.

Abstract: Weakly acidic ion exchange resins which have become partly charged with Ca ions are regenerated by carbonic acid to ppte. calcium carbonate in a multi-phase fluidised bed. This has four phases (resin, calcium carbonate, water and gaseous CO2). The regeneration is done at a constant cation exchange resin/water volume ratio. Gaseous CO2 or a CO2 contg. gas is fed through continuously as a fluidising medium and recycled round the reactor. The pptn. of CACO3 is accelerated by the addn. of CaCO3 particles and/or the recycle of the regenerating liquor. The volume ratio of resin/water should be between 1:1 to 1:3 pref. 1:1.3. The process is carried out batchwise with resin loading followed by regeneration. Used for regenerating ion exchange resins used to remove Ca ions from liq. streams. Process does not push the equilibrium position unfavourably for the acid side as would be necessary for Na loaded resins since for this a redn. of H+ ion occurs. Also the system uses considerably less regenerating liq., the pptd. CaCO3 being settled out or filtered off and the liq. recycled. This reduces the effluent problem.

Abstract: A method of separating granular pourable materials in fluidized bed layers formed by fluid media. These layers are withdrawn by a fluidizing medium from the top downwardly one after the other down to slightly above the border surface of the lowest layer but one. Subsequently, the fluidizing medium which remains above the residual layer is rotated, and the residual layer is completely withdrawn by means of the thus created secondary radial flow toward the central region.

Abstract: A process for scrubbing undissolved impurities from the upper portion of an ion exchange resin filtration bed is disclosed wherein air is introduced in the upper portion of the bed and develops a pressure within the vessel. This pressure subsequently forces rinse water down through the upper portion of the bed and out of the vessel. The gas is introduced into the bed and the water is drained therefrom at a level below the bed's upper surface but above a substantial lower portion of the resin bed. In this manner, lesser quantities of scrubbing fluids are required and the majority of the resin material is left undisturbed to maintain maximum ion exchange capacity.

Abstract: 1498139 Ion-exchange resin regeneration CLARKE CHAPMAN Ltd 19 March 1976 [7 May 1975] 19077/75 Heading B1J In a method of ion-exchange using a mixed bed of anion- and cation-exchange resins, cleaning and/or regenerating the bed comprises separating the anion and cation resins into upper and lower layers respectively, causing a downward flow of water through the anion resin layer and a horizontal flow of water above a number of horizontal bars positioned at the interface between the anion resin layer and the cation resin layer, the bars being disposed transversely of said horizontal flow, to convey the anion resin from the bed, adding cleaned and/or regenerated anion resin to the bed, and mixing the anion resin with the cation resin. The horizontal flow may be across the vessel from one side to the opposite side, or inwards from a "ring-main" to an outlet at the centre of the vessel. The initial separation into two layers may be by an upwards flow of liquid and the cation exchange resin may be regenerated in situ after removal of the anion exchange resin for regeneration in another vessel.
