In a spectrometer as claimed in the parent Specification, in which a body is examined by comparison of radiation intensity in two separate bands, dispersed radiation is received by elements which direct parts of the spectrum on to a detecting device, diverting means being provided so that a different part also falls on the device, means being provided for ensuring that the detector receives each part alternately and the means for directing the wavelengths along different paths comprises a mirror having two parts angularly offset relatively to each other. As shown, infra-red radiation from a source 10 is reflected from a plane mirror 11, a spherical mirror 12 producing an image of the source at Is, through a chopping plate 13 and on curved mirror 16 and plane mirror 17 so as to focus the radiation on to an entrance slit 18, the substance under examination being contained in a cell 35. After passing through the entrance slit the rays are collimated by a mirror 19, the parallel rays being dispersed by a prism 20 and reflected back through the prism for further dispersion by means of a pair of mirrors 21 placed one on top of the other, the angle at which they are positioned being capable of separate adjustment so that one selects one of the wavebands which fall on an exit slit 22 and the other the second waveband. The radiations are directed from the slit on to mirror 24 and focused by mirror 25 on to a detector 26. The chopping plate is so shaped as to allow the two selected wavebands to reach the detector alternately. The output of the detector is fed to a phase-sensitive rectifier also fed with a signal produced by a generator driven in synchronism with the chopping plate. The output of the rectifier represents the difference in the intensity of the two bands and may be used to adjust an attenuator in one of the beams. The collimating and focusing element may be lens, which are of quartz if ultra-violet radiation is used.
