Abstract:
Methods for producing forged products and other worked products are disclosed. In one embodiment, a method comprises using additive manufacturing to produce a metal shaped-preform and, after the using step, forging the metal shaped-preform into a final forged product. The final forged product may optionally be annealed.
Abstract:
A pin member for a fastener includes an elongated shank having a first end, a second end opposite the first end, a cylindrical shank portion having an outer surface, a head located at the first end of the elongated shank, the head including a bearing surface located on the bearing surface of the head, and a threaded portion located at the second end of the elongated shank. Either or both of the bearing surface of the head or the outer surface of the cylindrical shank portion is coated with a coating and/or is textured. The coating may be tungsten, molybdenum, copper, or a refractory ceramic. The textured surfaces may include a surface roughness greater than 0.5 micron.
Abstract:
Broadly, the present disclosure relates to sidewall features (e.g. inner sidewall or hot face) of an electrolysis cell, which protect the sidewall from the electrolytic bath while the cell is in operation (e.g. producing metal in the electrolytic cell).
Abstract:
A nose assembly for a fastener installation tool including an anvil, a collet, and a drawbar having a primary bearing. A secondary bearing is positioned within the collet and located intermediate the primary bearing and jaws of the collet. The secondary bearing is offset from the fastener centerline by a first distance and from a pulling tool centerline axis defined by a longitudinal axis of the drawbar by a second distance. In a pull position, the primary bearing remains engaged with the anvil during a loaded stroke and limits anvil deflection relative to the fastener centerline, while the secondary bearing remains engaged with the collet during the loaded stroke and limits deflection of the collet relative to the fastener centerline. In a return position, the primary bearing remains engaged with the anvil during a return stroke, while the secondary bearing remains engaged with the collet during the return stroke.
Abstract:
A substrate comprises of a recrystallized aluminum alloy. An organic polymer layer coats the top surface of the aluminum substrate. A layer of one of: SiO2, SiN and Al2O3 is on the organic polymer and at least one electrode is adhered to the layer of one of: SiO2, SiN and Al2O3. A method comprises depositing an organic polymer on an aluminum substrate, annealing the aluminum substrate; depositing a layer of one of SiO2, SiN and Al2O3 on the organic polymer; and adhering an electrode to the layer of one of: SiO2, SiN and Al2O3.

Abstract:
A fastener includes a pin member, a swage collar, and an insert. The pin member includes an elongated shank portion, a head, a threaded portion having an external thread and a plurality of lock grooves, and a pull portion. The swage collar includes a shank having a flange and a through bore with a first interior portion extending from a first end of the collar to a stepped portion and forming a first inner wall having a first inner diameter, and a second interior portion extending from the stepped portion to a second end of the collar and forming a second inner wall having a second inner diameter. The insert includes a through bore forming an inner wall that has an internal thread adapted to engage the external thread of the pin member.
Abstract:
An apparatus and method for fastening dissimilar materials like steel, plastic and aluminum. A resistance welding fastener having multiple layers may be used with or without a sealant. The fastener may be used to form an aluminum covered steel laminate via a hemming pattern of attachment. The fastener may have a solid shaft or have an extended reach and have features for interacting with the welding electrode. A variety of electrode tips may be employed to cooperate with the fastener.

An automobile component including an aluminum alloy product having a base aluminum alloy layer and a first additional aluminum alloy layer disposed directly on the base layer. The base aluminum alloy layer includes 2.0 to 22 wt. % zinc and the zinc is a predominate alloying element of the base layer other than aluminum and the first additional aluminum alloy layer includes 0.20 to 8.0 wt. % magnesium and the magnesium is a predominate alloying element of the first additional aluminum alloy layer other than aluminum. The automobile component may include outer panel sections, high form inner sections, reinforcement sections, crash sections, large flat panel sections, and high strength sections and, when tested in a static axial crush test, a peak load of the automobile component increases at least 20% when compared to alloy 6014 in the T6 temper.
Abstract:
A fastener including a bolt having an elongated shank having a first end, a second end opposite the first end, and a threaded portion having an external bolt thread, the bolt thread including a bolt pitch. The fastener includes a nut having a first end, a second end opposite the first end of the nut, and an internal nut thread extending between the first and second ends of the nut and adapted to engage threadedly the bolt thread of the bolt. The nut thread includes a nut pitch and a hardness that changes gradationally between the first and second ends of the nut. The bolt pitch of the bolt thread of the bolt is mismatched with the nut pitch of the nut thread of the nut.
