    Abstract: Herbicides contain a mixt. of (a) a cpd. of formula (I) (where X is OCH3, Y is Cl, R is H and R1 is OCH3, or R is cycloalkenyl, R1 is H, OCH3 or CH3 and X and Y are Cl, Br, F, I, Ch3, OCH3 or H) and/or (b) a cpd. of formula (II) (where X is Cl or OCH3, Y is H or Cl and R is lower alkyl or H) or a salt thereof and/or (c) a cpd. of formula (III) (where X is halogen, n is 0-3, and R is lower alkyl or haloalkyl) and/or (d) a cpd. of formula (IV) or (V) and/or (e) a cpd. of formula (VI) (where R is halogen or phenyl, phenoxy or cyclohexyloxy opt. substd. by CH3, CF3 halogen or NO2, OR1 and R2 are H, halogen, alkoxy, acetoxy, haloacetoxy or OH and R3 is H or halogen) or a salt thereof and/or (f) a cpd. of formula (VII) (where R is lower alkyl and R1 is H) or a salt thereof and/or (g) a cpd. of formula (VIII) and/or a cpd. of formula (IX). The combinations are useful as total or selective herbicides depending on the rates of application. The combinations have better herbicidal activity than the individual cpds.

They may be prepared by reacting a chlorosulphinate of formula ClSO 2 R 3 with a glycollic amide of formula The products of the invention may be used as active ingredients in herbicidal compositions. The compositions may contain conventional extenders and diluents, wetting agents, other herbicides or pesticides or growth regulators.
