Abstract: Two rolls (34, 36) are mounted to a frame (30) and rotated about spaced parallel axes (62) by electric motors (56) operating through speed reducers (58). Each roll (34, 36) has a surface (40, 42) formed of uniformly spaced, circumferential extending triangular grooves (44) and ridges (46) defined between grooves (44). The ridges (46) of one roll (34, 36) are closely spaced from the grooves (44) of the other roll (34, 36) to define a sinuous nip (32) therebetween. Abstract: A hydrostatic self-loading controlled deflection roll has a central, hydraulically operated shoe which extends substantially the entire cross-machine width of the rotating roll shell (1), and two outboard shoes (24, 26, 28, 30) disposed, in the cross-machine direction, outside of the nip loading zone. The use of the outboard shoes (24, 26, 28, 30) permits the use of a single, full-length nip shoe (3) within the nip loading zone, which simplifies control and provides for more uniform temperature distribution. The outboard shoes (24, 26, 28,30) also provide better crown control. The outboard shoes (24, 26, 28, 30) are preferably disposed within a head flange (17, 18) area of the roll, at the location where spherical bearings would normally be present in a conventional roll. A bearing ring is disposed axially outside of the head flange (17, 18) and around a portion of a bearing box at either end of the roll for rotatably supporting the roll shell about bearings in the bearing box. Abstract: An annular base (50) has radial breaker bars (38, 40) for transporting the high consistency stock from the flinger nut (24) section of the refiner (20) to the refining plates (28, 30). The radial breaker bars (38, 40) are curved so that the radial outward ends curve away from the direction of rotation. The curved bars (38, 40) aid in the transportation of pulp from the inside diameter (52) to the outside diameter (54) of the breaker bar section (26) thereby improving feeding. Abstract: The refiner plate for a low consistency pulp refiner has a multiplicity of curved bars (50) or zig-zag bars (76), or a combination of the two. The operation of a disc refiner causes a rapid and frequent flexure over a brief time period of the individual fibers in a pulp mass, with the result that the bond between the various concentric lamallae comprising an individual fiber are broken down or delaminated to a controlled, desired extent. The individual bars which traverse a surface of the rotating and fixed plates dissipate the power supplied by the central shaft to the rotating plate. The multiplicity of curved bars or zig-zag bars, or a combination of the two have a longer bar length, and therefore lower the power dissipation per bar and per bar unit length. The flow of pulp containing the fiber also generally follows the channels between the bars so that longer bar path length results in longer residence time. Thus, the result of curved or zig-zag bars is more gentle refining action which continues over a longer time. Curving the refiner bars causes them to function better as a pump.

Abstract: Methods for processing wood chips (54) for digestion utilize a chip destructuring apparatus. The method includes an initial disc screen (42) for removing the gross overthick and oversized chips which are discarded or are processed through a rechipper (48). After the initial disc screen, the entire stream of chips is processed to eliminate tramp metal. The entire chip stream is screened (60) to remove fines. The stream of chips is fed to the chip destructuring apparatus from a surge bin (50) with a star feeder (52). The star feeder is a metering device and is operated by a controller (58) which monitors the level of chips in the surge bin. The controller uses the star feeder to feed a steady supply of chips to the chip destructuring apparatus which allows the destructuring apparatus to be configured for a maximum feed rate.

Abstract: An apparatus (10) for making tissue (T) is disclosed in which a Yankee dryer (12) has a peripheral surface (14) for supporting the tissue (T). Abstract: A single tier drying section apparatus (10) is disclosed for drying a web of paper (W). Abstract: A forming apparatus (10) is disclosed for forming a web (W) from stock (S) ejected from a headbox (12). The apparatus (10) includes a fourdrinier wire (14) which defines a substantially horizontal section (16) having a first and a second end (18, 20). A headbox (12) is disposed adjacent to and above the first end (18) of the horizontal section (16) for ejecting the stock (S) onto the fourdrinier wire (22) between the first and the second end (18, 20) of the section (16). The arrangement is such that during movement of the fourdrinier wire (14) over the curved shoe (30), water (32) is thrown centrifugally from the stock (S) to the forming wire (22). A vacuum slot (34) is disposed on an opposite side of the wires (14, 22) relative to the shoe (30) for conveying the water (32) removed centrifugally through the forming wire (22). A curved inverted vacuum box (36) is disposed immediately downstream relative to the vacuum slot (34) and on the same side of the wires (14, 22) as the vacuum slot (34). The curved box (36) defines a curved face (38) for guiding the wires (14, 22). The curved face (38) is curved in an opposite sense relative to the curved forming shoe (30). A looped blanket (40) is disposed on the same side of the wires (14, 22) as the shoe (30), the blanket (40) being disposed adjacent to and on the opposite side of the wires (14, 22) relative to the curved face (38). Abstract: A transitional duct (10A) is disclosed for guiding stock (12A) from a supply pipe (14A) of circular cross-sectional configuration to a header (16A) of a headbox (18), the header (16A) having a recttangular cross-sectional configuration. The arrangement is such that turbulent mixing of the stock (12A) after passage of the stock over the step (30) enhances the generation of a uniform cross-sectional flow profile downstream relative to the step (30).
