Abstract: In the carboxylation of 2-alkali metal naphtholates under pressure and at temperatures of above 200 DEG C., apart from the alkali metal salt of 2-naphthol-3-carboxylic acid and free 2-naphthol considerable amounts of resinous by-products are obtained which according to the hitherto known processes have to be separated and removed in a very expensive manner. According to this invention, the alkali-soluble acidic resins are separated from this carboxylation melt after its solution in water during the work-up of the carboxylation product by means of a cationic quaternary ammonium compound. These surface-active compounds precipitate the alkali-soluble acidic resins in such a manner that they can be easily removed from the alkali metal salts of 2-hydroxynaphthalene-3-carboxylic acid dissolved in water.

Abstract: of the disclosure New water-insoluble compounds had been found of the formula wherein the R are different or the same and each is halogen, lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, phenoxy, phenoxy substituted by 1 or 2 substituents selected from the group consisting of halogen, lower alkyl and lower alkoxy, hydroxy, cyano, trifluoromethyl, carboxy, carboxylic acid lower alkyl ester, lower alkanoyl, benzoyl or benzoyl substituted by 1 or 2 substituents selected from the group consisting of halogen, lower alkyl and lower alkoxy, n is 1, 2 or 3 and Z is hydrogen, halogen, lower alkoxy, nitro or cyano, which are well suitable as pigments for dyeing polymer masses, lacquers, caoutchouc, synthetic leather or spin-dyeing viscose or cellulose acetate, for paper and printing pastes. The dyeings obtained with them are excellently fast to light, weather and organic solvents and to the action of heat and are distinguished by a high tinctorial strength, good transparency and very clear shades.

Abstract: Aldehydes of a 2-hydroxy-naphthalene-3-carboxylic acid arylide of the general formula in which X represents a hydrogen, chlorine or bromine atom, and Ar represents a naphthyl group, a benzimidazolone or chlorobenzimidazolone group or a phenyl group which may carry 1 to 3 lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, lower alkylsulfonyl, lower carboalkoxy, halogen, trifluoromethyl, nitro, cyano, lower alkanoylamino, benzoylamino, carboxamido or sulfonamido groups, and a process for their preparation wherein the corresponding 2-hydroxy-naphthalene-3-carboxylic acid arylide is reacted in a lower aliphatic carboxylic acid with hexamethylene tetramine and a mineral acid. These aldehydes are valuable intermediate products for the synthesis of optical brighteners and, in particular, of axamethine pigments which are obtained by condensation of these aldehydes with suitable amines. The pigments thus obtained are distinguished by good fastness properties and are especially suitable for the printing of paper and the coloring of lacquers, varnishes and plastics.
