Abstract: A method for use in a code division multiple access (CDMA) subscriber unit, the method comprising receiving first data transmitted from a first base station; selecting a second base station to transmit second data to the CDMA subscriber unit; transmitting a signal to the second base station, wherein the signal designates the second base station, instead of the first base station, to transmit the second data to the CDMA subscriber unit; receiving a power command from the first base station after transmitting the signal; and adjusting an output power of the CDMA subscriber unit in response to the power command after the second base station is selected.

Abstract: A multiple access, spread-spectrum communication system processes a plurality of information signals received by a Radio Carrier Station (RCS) over telecommunication lines for simultaneous transmission over a radio frequency (RF) channel as a code-division-multiplexed (CDM) signal to a group of Subscriber Units (SUs). The RCS receives a call request signal that corresponds to a telecommunication line information signal, and a user identification signal that identifies a user to receive the call. The RCS includes a plurality of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) modems, one of which provides a global pilot code signal. The modems provide message code signals synchronized to the global pilot signal. Each modem combines an information signal with a message code signal to provide a CDM processed signal. The RCS includes a system channel controller coupled to receive a remote call. An RF transmitter is connected to all of the modems to combine the CDM processed signals with the global pilot code signal to generate a CDM signal. The RF transmitter also modulates a carrier signal with the CDM signal and transmits the modulated carrier signal through an RF communication channel to the SUs. Each SU includes a CDMA modem which is also synchronized to the global pilot signal. The CDMA modem despreads the CDM signal and provides a despread information signal to the user. The system includes a closed loop power control system for maintaining a minimum system transmit power level for the RCS and the SUs, and system capacity management for maintaining a maximum number of active SUs for improved system performance.

Abstract: A wireless code division multiple access (CDMA) subscriber unit comprising: a transmitter configured such that, when the subscriber unit is first accessing a CDMA network and wants to establish communications with a base station associated with the network over a communication channel to be indicated by the base station, the transmitter successively transmits signals until the subscriber unit receives from the base station an indication that a transmitted one of the signals has been detected by the base station, wherein each transmission of one of the signals by the transmitter is at an increased power level with respect to a prior transmission of one of the signals; the transmitter further configured such that the transmitter transmits to the base station a message indicating to the base station that the subscriber unit wants to establish the communications with the base station over the communication channel to be indicated by the base station, the message being transmitted only subsequent to the subscriber unit receiving the indication, wherein the successively transmitted signals and the message are generated using a same code.

Abstract: A communication method for use with a code division multiple access (CDMA) subscriber unit is disclosed. The method includes generating a first code wherein the first code has a first length and generating a second code wherein the second code has a second length greater than the first length and a period which is aligned with the length of the first code. A first radio frequency signal is transmitted from an antenna of the CDMA subscriber unit wherein the first radio frequency signal carries the first code at a first power level, at least a portion of the second code, and data. In an absence of an acknowledgement signal received by the CDMA subscriber unit, a power level of the first code is set to a second power level wherein the second power level is greater than the first power level.

Abstract: A multicellular communications system where transmission between a roving subscriber and multiple base station transceivers is maintained throughout the territory. Each mobile subscriber unit has global code seeds for the entire communications system or an updated neighbor list and continuously searches to access available cell base stations while maintaining a communication link with one base station. Candidate cell base stations are interrogated and communicated with. The candidate base station that requires less transmitting energy from the mobile subscriber unit is closely monitored. When the mobile subscriber unit can successfully communicate with less transmit power than currently required by the present base station, the mobile subscriber unit is handed off to the candidate base station transceiver.
