Abstract: CE00335H A unique cellular data telephone system includes a cellular telephone system (CTS 150), a cellular data switch (CDS 170), and a telephone central office (130) for providing both voice and data telephone services to portable and mobile cellular data telephones (CDTs 102, 122) located anywhere in a large geographical area. Each of the CDTs (102, 122) includes a data control unit (DCU 106), a cellular modem (162) and a cellular telephone (108) and associated antenna (110), and connects to a data terminal (104, 124) with keyboard and display. DCU (106) includes memory (302) for storing a CDS telephone number and CDT telephone number, microcomputer (304) with internal memory for controlling data communications between cellular modem (162) and data terminal (104), a dual tone multifrequency ("DTMF") encoder (306) for encoding telephone numbers and control signals, a DTMF decoder (314) for decoding DTMF telephone digits and/or DTMF control tones, a buffer (312) for storing transmit data from data terminal (104), and analog switches (308, 310) for coupling DTMF encoder (306) and buffer (312) to the transmit data Td signal to cellular modem (162). If data terminal (104) is inactive for a predetermined time interval, DCU (106) automatically disconnects the cellular telephone call while maintaining the landline telephone call to a data host (140, 141). Once data is transmitted again by data terminal (104), DCU (106) automatically places another cellular telephone call and is reconnected to the landline telephone call.

Abstract: There is provided a scheme for bit error rate detection. It is characterised by: detecting the bit value present in a received multi-level signal (102), more narrowly detecting the bit value present in that received multi-level signal (104), comparing the results of narrow detection with the results detected otherwise to identify errors in detection (203, 206, 207 and 209), and accumulating detected symbol errors over unit time. Bit error rate detection can be used for antenna selection-selecting one of a plurality of diversity antennas when the error rate exceeds (213) a certain error threshold.

Abstract: A data communications sustem (Figure 1) is described that covers a geographic area divided into a plurality of non-overlapping zones (Figure 2) and includes a general communications controller (GCC, 104), a plurality of channel communications modules (CCM 106, 108, 110, 112) and associated transmitters (114, 120, 124) and receivers (116, 118, 122, 126, 128), and a plurality of portable radios (130, 132, 134). Message signals carrying alphanumeric information are communication between the GCC (104) and the portable radios (130, 132, 134) by way of a radio channel. Each CCM (106, 108, 110, 112) takes a signal strength measurement every time it receives a message signal from a portable radio (130, 132 or 134). The GCC (104) gathers the signal strength measurements from the CCM receivers (116, 118, 122, 126, 128) receiving the same message signal and computes an adjusted signal strength for each zone. The GCC (104) then selects the zone having the largest adjusted signal strength for determining the location of the portable radio (130, 132 or 134) that transmitted the message signal. Whenever the GCC (104) transmits a message signal to a portable radio, the CCM transmitter (114, 120, 124) is used that covers the zone having the largest adjusted signal strength for the last transmission from that portable radio (130, 132, 134) in other zones using non-interfering CCM transmitters (114, 120, 124), information throughput is greatly enhanced.

Abstract: An apparatus scales binary samples representing a predetermined waveform (109) to achieve every possible transition in a multi-level transmission system. The predetermined waveform (109) is partitioned into M symbol intervals, each symbol interval having a corresponding waveform represented by a series of binary samples V stored in M separate ROM devices (311-316). Depending on the required amplitude and polarity of the transition, logic blocks (351-356) control scaling multipliers (321-326) and polarity multipliers (331-336) to perform the required scaling and inverting of the binary samples retrieved from ROM (311-316). The scaled and inverted samples are added together by an adder (345) and sent to a D/A converter (350) where the desired scaled and inverted waveform is converted/generated from the scaled and inverted binary samples.
