    Abstract: A system (10) and method for packet telephony power management of a cable distribution network (20), i.e., a hybrid fiber coax (HFC) communication system, for internet protocol (IP) packet telephony information between multiple cable modem subscriber units (16,18) communicated over a public switch telephone network (PSTN) (32) with at least one router (28), e.g., a cable modem termination system (CMTS) on a communication network backbone. Power management is provided to minimize power consumption on the IP telephony distribution system (10) supporting line-powered cable-modem subscriber units (16). The power saving techniques are supported using a virtual broadcast channel (VBC) (62) provided in the packet telephony system using an alert queue (60). The alert queue (60) is established and segmented into a plurality of phases for selective activation, each phase having memory buffers for buffering packet telephony information communicated via the CMTSs (28). The multiple cable modem subscriber units (16,18) are divided into a plurality of alert phase groups, each alert phase group being associated with one of the plurality of phases of the alert queue. The VBC (62) may then be provided between the CMTS (28) and the subscriber units (16,18) for transmitting control information.

Multiple videophone apparatuses (700, 800) may be used simultaneously, and multiple video signals from the videophone apparatuses (700, 800) may be multiplexed and combined into one composite video signal for transmission to the network (140).

    Abstract: A telephony system having automatic timing adjustment for diverse routing of HFC systems has a signal stream routing through a signal line loop between a head-end and at least one communication unit. If a fault occurs within the signal line loop, recognized by the head-end when a short uplink burst from the communication unit does not align within a predetermined timing window, the head-end will cycle through predetermined delay parameters corresponding to various alternate signal line loops made up of redundant signal lines. Once the predetermined delay parameter corresponding to the current alternate signal line loop is determined, normal operation of the system resumes.

    Abstract: A control unit (102) efficiently decodes burst signal transmissions in a TDMA-based telecommunication system (100) by decimating down the number of samples requiring processing during symbol detection. The control unit (102) includes a sampling receiver (304) that inputs burst signals from cable access units, converts them to a pair of baseband quadrature signals, I and Q. The sampling receiver (304) also includes an A/D converter (314) that samples the I and Q signals at preferably four times the symbol rate. A digital signal processor circuit (306) produces a timing error signal for substantially all of the samples. The digital processor circuit (306) also accumulates a timing error sum for each of the four samples. The processor circuit (306) selects the optimum sample as the sample between the samples having the largest positive and negative error sums. The processor circuit (306) also includes a pi /4-DQPSK differential detector that processes the optimum sample of each symbol for symbol detection.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus in a communications system (100) for providing communications units (134) access to the communications system (100). The base communications unit (102) sends a first type of data transmission including an identification of access channels used for requesting access to the communications system (100). The base communications unit (102) assigns channels within the second set of channels response to receiving a request for access to the communications system (100) on the first set of channels. A mechanism also is provided for handling collisions in transmissions between the downstream communications units (134) to the base communications unit (102) in attempting to gain access to the communications system (100).

    Abstract: In accordance with the present invention, there is provided a register-modelled radio system comprising a plurality of register-modelled processors having addressable registers for modelling the virtual state of the processor; a serial bus, interconnecting the registermodelled processors for communicating between the addressable registers; and a communications protocol for passing said information to or from said addressable registers, whereby the virtual state of said radio portion may be determined or altered by, respectively, communicating information from or to said addressable register means. The communications protocol further comprises information packet having an address, an operation code, optional data, and an error detection device, such as a cyclical redundancy check packet. The operation code is chosen from the group of primitive operation codes reset, read, write, bit set, bit clear, acknowledge, and negative acknowledge.
